George LopezGeorge Lopez is a lucky man in many ways. He has a successful sitcom on television, a successful stand-up comedy career, and best of all, has a new lease on life thanks to a kidney transplant, with a kidney donated by his wife.
Lopez was born on April 23, 1961, in Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California, to a Mexican American family. He broke into stand-up comedy with an act that was based solely around growing up in a Latino family in the United States. He has released four comedy CDs, including Alien Nation, Team Leader, and Right Here Right Now, and he later released his comedy on DVDs titled as El Mas Chignon and Why You Crying? The latter DVD looks back on his formative years, as does the autobiography he penned with Armen Keteyian, Why You Crying?: My Long Hard Look at Life, Love, and Laughter.
Along with his stand-up act, Lopez appeared in a few movies early in his career, such as the Bruce Lee movie Fist of Fear, Touch of Death, and Ski Patrol. He also appeared in the spoof Fatal Instinct, with Armand Assante and Sherilyn Fenn, and in Real Women Have Curves as Mr. Guzman, an influential teacher to a young woman who isn’t sure where to go with her life.
It was actress Sandra Bullock who brought Lopez to the world of television, after noting a lack of Hispanic television shows. The result was The George Lopez Show, the fourth ever Latino led sitcom, produced by Bullock and the people behind another successful sitcom starring a comedian, The Drew Carey Show. Lopez stars along with Constance Marie, Valente Rodriguez, Masiela Lusha, Luis Armand Garcia, Belita Moreno, and Emiliano Diez as his friends and family in The George Lopez Show. Not only has the show continued to be a success, but Lopez’s character who shares the same name as him, has been named #18 on a list of The 50 Greatest TV Dads of All Time.
When not filming The George Lopez Show, Lopez always has several other projects in the works. While continuing his stand-up, he has also filmed the movies Ali G Indahouse, The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D, and the made-for TV Disney movie Naughty or Nice. He has at times provided commentary for Inside the NFL on HBO and also hosted a radio program in Los Angeles. An avid golfer, Lopez was the top ranking celebrity golfer at the 2004 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and also took part in The 2004 Chrysler Bob Hope Classic.
Lopez has been married to Ana Serrano since 1993, and they have one child. It was his wife who provided him with a kidney in 2005 when Lopez was in need of a transplant. Along with being a supporter of the National Kidney Foundation, he and his wife head up the charity The George & Ann Lopez-Richie Alarcon CARE Foundation that is dedicated to providing community and arts resources for education. Recognized for his charity work, Lopez has received the Manny Mota Foundation Community Spirit Award, and because of his efforts helping earthquake victims in El Salvador and Guatemala, was named Honorary Mayor of Los Angeles. Harvard University presented him with Artist of the Year and Humanitarian Awards. Because of all this, Time magazine named Lopez as one of The 25 Most Influential Hispanics in America. YUDDY |
