George LucasGeorge Lucas has achieved tremendous success as a producer, director, and screenwriter. Born in California in 1944, he studied Film Production and Film Studies. He went on to co-found American Zoetrope studios with his friend and fellow director, Francis Ford Coppola. Later, Lucas started his own studio called Lucasfilm. Part of this operation was Industrial Light and Magic, a pioneering department that made great advances in special effects and sound production.
In 1971, George Lucas directed and wrote the story for an influential science fiction film called THX 1138. It starred Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasance. A box office success followed two years later, when Lucas directed and co-wrote American Graffiti. The rites of passage story set in 1962 starred Richard Dreyfuss and Ron Howard. In 1999, George would take Dr Dre to court for sampling the theme song from the movie.
George Lucas directed Star Wars in 1977. It was the beginning of a global phenomenon and this accomplishment changed his life forever. He also produced and wrote the story for Star Wars along with its two sequels. The space adventure made stars of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Hans Solo, and Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia. Alec Guinness played Obi-Wan Kenobi and James Earl Jones supplied the gravel voice for Darth Vader. The sequel, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, was directed this time by Irvin Kershner and the regular cast was joined by Billy Dee Williams. The third installment, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, featured the same regulars, and Richard Marquand directed.
The original Star Wars trilogy was not the end of the story. In 1999, George Lucas released the first of three more installments. Lucas was executive producer, director, and writer for all three. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace starred Ewan McGregor as the young Obi-Wan Kenobi and the film co-starred Liam Neeson and Natalie Portman. Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones starred McGregor and Portman again, this time joined by Samuel L Jackson and Christopher Lee. Finally, the story finished with Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith with McGregor, Portman, Jackson, and Lee, plus the addition of Jimmy Smits.
The Indiana Jones trilogy is the other series and cultural phenomenon that George Lucas is renowned for creating. He produced the trilogy and Steven Spielberg directed all three movies, with Harrison Ford in the lead role. Raiders of the Lost Ark was the first adventure and co-starred Karen Allen, Paul Freeman, and Alfred Molina. Next came Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom with Kate Capshaw. The final film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade featured Sean Connery, Denholm Elliot, and River Phoenix.
In addition to Star Wars and Indiana Jones, George Lucas found time to create other movies. He produced a fantasy called Labyrinth, starring singer and actor David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, and directed by Jim Henson. Lucas produced and wrote another fantasy movie called Willow, directed by Ron Howard, and starring Val Kilmer and Joanne Whalley.
The Star Wars franchise has made Lucas a very wealthy man, as he owns the rights to the merchandise. He has proven he’s a good sport by allowing Mel Brooks permission to parody Star Wars in his film Spaceballs.
George Lucas was married in 1969 to film editor Marcia Lou Griffin; they divorced in 1983. Lucas has also had a long term relationship with singer Linda Ronstadt. YUDDY |
