Guy Pearce Bio

|
Guy PearceGuy Pearce is an actor and musician who has proven himself capable of success in a wide variety of film and television roles.
Guy Edward Pearce was born on October 5, 1967, in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England. His father was a pilot from New Zealand and his mother was an English schoolteacher. Pearce had an older sister, Tracey, who suffered from a learning disorder. When he was three years old the family moved to Geelong in the Australian province of Victoria, where his father became famous for his work as a test pilot on the Nomad program. Unfortunately, six years later, a plane crash ended his father's life, and the young Pearce grew up struggling with grief and a crushing sense of responsibility for his surviving family.
Pearce attended Geelong College, where his dislike of math and science, and preference for the arts made him unpopular. His mother encouraged his interests though, taking him to plays whenever she could. He made his own stage début at the age of nine and went on to appear in several plays for the Geelong Society of Operatic and Dramatic Arts. To prove to his schoolmates that this didn't make him any less manly, he also took up body-building, winning the Mr. Junior Victoria contest at the age of sixteen and Mr. Natural Victoria at twenty-two.
It was Pearce's school drama teacher who realized Pearce had an exceptional talent and encouraged him to apply for auditions. This led to a commercial for Mars Bars and an ongoing role in the soap opera Neighbors, alongside Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan. Meanwhile, Pearce's mother remarried, which helped him to stabilize his personal life, and he got together with researcher Shaney Stone who was to be his live-in partner for eight years. During this time Peace took advantage of his musical talents (he's a capable pianist and saxophonist) to take on the role of a pop star in the film Heaven Tonight, written and produced by successful musician and Boulevard of Broken Dreams creator Frank Howson. This led to the offer of the lead role in an Errol Flynn biopic, with Stephen Berkoff and Claudia Karvan. Pearce ditched Neighbors for this new role, whose producers didn't like the risqué nature of the part. He later found regular work in rival soap Home and Away, but this began to become problematic as his image caused friction with fellow actors when he was playing Shakespearian roles in the theater. Fortunately, in 1994, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert came along, with Terence Stamp and Hugo Weaving. This changed everything.
After playing so spectacularly against type as a travelling drag queen, Pearce was offered a dazzling variety of roles. He found stardom in the James Ellroy adaptation LA Confidential, with Kevin Spacey, Russell Crowe, and Kim Basinger, but his dislike of life in the United States made him hesitate about getting closely involved with Hollywood. Pearce showed off his acting talent in the independent movies Ravenous, with Robert Carlyle and David Arquette; and Memento, with Carrie-Anne Moss and Joe Pantoliano before being persuaded to make the blockbusters Rules of Engagement, with Tommy Lee Jones, Samuel L Jackson, and Ben Kingsley; and The Count of Monte Cristo, with James Caviezel and Richard Harris. Next came the lead in a populist adaptation of HG Wells classic The Time Machine. Later, Pearce regained the support of the critics with a complex role in Nick Cave's The Proposition, alongside Ray Winstone and Emily Watson. His next appearance will be as Andy Warhol in Factory Girl, with Jude Law's ex-girlfriend Sienna Miller.
Despite his fame, Pearce prefers to live quietly in Melbourne with his wife of nine years, actress Kate Mestitz. YUDDY |
