Guy Ritchie Guy Ritchie is a writer, director, and producer who has enjoyed remarkable success with his British gangster films. He is also known for his marriage to Madonna .
Guy Ritchie was born on September 10, 1968, in Hatfield, England. His stepfather is Baronet Sir Michael Leighton of Loton Park and he is a descendent of King Edward I, but was never comfortable with his background and often affected working class behavior. Struggling with dyslexia, Richie was sent to the specialist school Stanbridge Earls but dropped out at the age of fifteen. He then attended Sibford School, from which he was expelled for taking drugs. After this, Ritchie concentrated on carving out a career for himself in film-making, getting a job as a runner and moving on to make music videos. Saving the money he made from these and from commercials, Ritchie invested it in twenty minute short film The Hard Case. This attracted the attention of Sting's wife Trudie Styler, and she helped him to fund his début feature, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Despite its striking direction and the star presence of footballer Vinnie Jones, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels struggled to find a distributor. It was rescued by Tom Cruise, who persuaded Columbia Tristar to take the risk, and Ritchie’s film went on to become a massive hit. Richie followed it up with Snatch, which starred Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina, and Benicio Del Toro. Receiving both popular and critical acclaim, this firmly established Ritchie as a director.
In 1998, Ritchie met pop megastar Madonna at a party at Sting's house, and two years later the couple married. Madonna wore an antique lace dress made by Paul McCartney's daughter, Stella McCartney. Guests at the wedding included Gwyneth Paltrow, Pierce Adams, Donatella Versace, George Clooney, Robin Williams, and Rupert Everett. A few months later the couple had a son, Rocco and Ritchie adopted Madonna's own daughter, Lourdes.
Thereafter, he began to build his film career around his wife, directing her in a controversial music video "What it Feels Like for a Girl," in which she runs people down in a car, and in the short film Star. Ritchie then cast her in a remake of Lina Wertmüller’s feature Swept Away, naming her character after his mother. The film also starred Bruce Greenwood and Jeanne Tripplehorn, but was not a success. Richie then turned to Luc Besson for help in scripting his next project, Revolver, featuring Jason Statham and Ray Liotta in the story of a gambler on the run from a mob boss. Again the film made little impression on the critics, though it fared slightly better at the box office.
Ritchie lives in Ashcombe House, a country retreat, but also has homes in Los Angeles, New York City, and London, the latter a good base from which to attend matches featuring his favorite football team, Chelsea F.C. Ritchie is fiercely protective of his privacy and in 2000 was charged with assault on a twenty-year-old man outside his London home, though the charges were later dropped. He and Madonna went through a shaky period after he ceased practicing the Kabbalah religion, but the couple has since arranged to renew their wedding vows. YUDDY |
