Gwen Stefani BiographyGwen Stefani is a singer, songwriter, and actress most famous as the lead vocalist with the band No Doubt. Her distinctive style and forthright attitude have guaranteed her status as an international celebrity.
Gwendolyn Renée Stefani was born on October 3, 1969, in Fullerton, California. The family thereafter moved to Anaheim, where she grew up with her sister, Jill, and brothers, Eric and Todd. As a child Stefani was shy and hard working. She swam for her school and worked as a cleaner and a cosmetic counter assistant. Her life changed when she discovered that she could write songs and decided to join the rock band No Doubt, which was established by her brother Eric and his friend John Spence. No Doubt enjoyed some local success, and when Spence committed suicide in 1987 Stefani took over as lead vocalist. They were joined by bassist Tony Kanal, with whom she began a seven year love affair; and later, by guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young. Stefani struggled to balance her commitment to the band with her studies at California State Fullerton College. In 1990 No Doubt recorded a demo with the help of Red Hot Chilli Peppers bassist Flea, which led to a contract with Interscope Records.
The first two albums released by Stefani's band, No Doubt and The Beacon Street Collection, solidified their local popularity. When Stefani and Kanal broke up, they very nearly split musically as well, and Eric Stefani left to work as an animator on Matt Groening's The Simpsons. The others were persuaded to finish work on a third album, Tragic Kingdom, which became a massive hit that sold over fourteen million copies worldwide. The personal fame which this gave Stefani, enhanced by a series of spectacular videos, again created tension within the band. Nevertheless, No Doubt stuck together to release two further albums, plus collections of singles and rarities, and they plan to record together in the future.
In the meantime, Stefani began work on solo projects. In 2004 she released Love. Angel. Music. Baby., which enjoyed international success and attracted five Grammy nominations. It featured collaborations with Dr Dre, Dallas Austin, Wendy & Lisa, OutKast's André 3000, New Order's Peter Hook, and 4 Non Blondes' Linda Perry. Stefani also released singles featuring Moby and Eve, and has noted that she hopes to work with the band Keane in the near future.
Besides her success with music, Stefani has taken an interest in several other industries, starring as Jean Harlow in Martin Scorses's Howard Hughes biopic The Aviator, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Cate Blanchett, Jude Law, and Alec Baldwin; and playing a cameo role in Ben Stiller vehicle Zoolander. Her fashion line, L.A.M.B., proved a big hit after attracting the attention of celebrities like Paris Hilton, Halle Berry, and Carmen Electra. Stefani has since launched a second line called Harajuku Lovers, inspired by Japanese fashion. Stefani has also designed and promoted a camera for Hewlett-Packard.
In 1995, Stefani met Gavin Rossdale, singer with Bush and Institute, at a concert, and in 2002 they married in St. Paul's Cathedral in London, with Stefani wearing a dress designed by John Galliano. They now divide their time between homes in London's Primrose Hill and in Anaheim, and they have a baby son, Kingston. Stefani has previously been romantically linked to every member of Orange County band The Vandals, but asserts that she has only ever had two serious boyfriends.
