Hank AzariaHank Azaria is an actor, comedian, singer, writer, director, and producer probably most famous for his voice-over work on The Simpsons.
Hank Albert Azaria was born on April 25, 1964, in Queens, New York, to Jewish parents from Thessaloniki in Greece. He has an older sister, Stephanie. Inspired by the screen performances of Jack Lemmon, Azaria took an early interest in acting and studied drama at Tufts University, alongside Oliver Platt, before progressing to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City (where Sharon Stone was also a student at the time). Azaria paid his way through college through work as a bartender. Thereafter, Azara worked as a stand-up comic and took bit parts on stage and on TV, as well as appearing in a film called Cool Blue, alongside Woody Harrelson. Azaria got his big break when he joined the voice cast of animated series The Simpsons. The show went on to enjoy massive success, and Azaria has remained with it throughout, despite enjoying success in other areas of his career. He is currently involved in making a big screen version, and has also guest-starred in another Matt Groening production, Futurama.
In 1990, Azaria had a small role in the hit movie Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. In 1991, Azaria landed a role in the sitcom Herman's Head, with Edward Winter. This helped to raise his profile in Hollywood, though he always favored diverse and interesting roles over those that might make him more familiar to audiences. Azaria’s television work has included regular roles in Mad About You, with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt; Friends, with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow; and Huff, with Paget Brewster and Anton Yelchin, in which he played the lead. Azaria has contributed voice work to Street Sharks and the animated Spider-Man series. As a movie actor, his work has included Robert Redford's Quiz Show, with John Turturro and Ralph Fiennes; Great Expectations, with Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Robert De Niro; Godzilla, with Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno; Mystery Men, with Claire Forlani, Janeane Garofalo, and Geoffrey Rush; and Along Came Polly, with Ben Stiller and Alec Baldwin. In 2004 he invested $300,000 of his own money to direct and produce the short film Nobody's Perfect, in which he starred alongside Ellen Pompeo and Grant Heslov.
Despite his success in film and television, Azaria has never lost interest in stage work. He has appeared alongside Minnie Driver in a London production of David Mamet's Sexual Perversity in Chicago and was nominated for a Tony award for his performance in Spamalot, the theatrical version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which played on Broadway. Demonstrating his dedication to his craft, Azaria explained that he had to stick pins into himself to keep from laughing during the show.
From 1994 onwards, Azaria was in a relationship with actress Helen Hunt; the two married in 1999 but divorced just a year later. He is now dating Rock Star: INXS contestant Suzie McNeil. In his spare time, Azaria volunteers for the Young Storytellers Program, going into schools in deprived areas to help children develop an interest in creative work. Other stars involved in the project include Matthew Perry, Emily Procter, Fred Savage, and Ron Perlman. YUDDY |
