Hector ElizondoPuerto Rican-American actor Hector Elizondo has appeared in film, television, theater, and radio over the last forty years. He is best known for his role as Dr. Phillip Watters on the CBS television series Chicago Hope. In 1997 he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of the doctor.
Elizondo was born December 22, 1936, in New York City , to parents Martin Echevarria Elizondo and Carmen Medina Reyes. He is the older of two children with a younger sister named Emma.
He first appeared on local radio when he was just ten years old. He was singing for the Frank Murray Boy’s choir when he was discovered by the legendary WC Handy (Father of the Blues) who portrayed Nat King Cole in the 1958 biographical drama, St. Louis Blues. Elizondo appeared with WC Handy on both local radio and local TV.
Elizondo graduated from junior high school in 1951, and went on to study at a public high school where he excelled at basketball and baseball. His baseball skills were so good that he was scouted by both the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
While in high school he took voice lessons in the High School of Performing Arts . After his graduation from high school in 1954, Elizondo went to the City College of New York with plans to become a history teacher. But he dropped out in his freshman year because he became a father to son Rodd, and wanted to work full-time to support his family.
He later went on to study dance at the Ballet Arts Company at Carnegie Hall. Besides being a ballet dancer, Elizondo was also a conga player with a Latin band, a classical guitarist and singer, a weightlifting coach, and a manager of a bodybuilding gym. However, the five-foot-ten actor was forced to switch his career focus to drama after a knee injury ended his dance career.
In 1963 he landed parts in two off-Broadway shows: Kill the One-Eyed Man and The Great White Hope. It was also during this time that he was briefly married to his second wife, having divorced his first in 1957.
In the mid-1960s Elizondo made the transition from stage acting to movie acting and has since been in over eighty theater and made-for-television movies. He has appeared in twelve of director Garry Marshall’s movies, including 1990’s Pretty Woman starring Richard Gere and Julia Roberts. Elizondo received a credited role for his ten minute appearance as Barney Thompson, and ended up getting Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the character. He appeared once again with Gere and Roberts in Runaway Bride in 1999.
Elizondo married for a third time in 1969 to actress Carolee Campbell, a star of the former NBC soap The Doctors. The couple is currently still married and lives in Sherman Oaks, California. YUDDY |
