Though they seemed to be merely close friends on the reality show, Howard claims he had a clandestine relationship with Anna Nicole Smith, and the two were married on a boat near Nassau on September 28, 2006. The marriage was not legally binding, but was followed by the birth of Anna’s baby, Dannielynn, in September 2006.
Stern and Anna Nicole Smith were living in the Bahamas in an attempt to avoid any paternity testing of her daughter in the United States. On September 10, 2006, while in hospital in the Bahamas, just two days after giving birth to her daughter, Anna Nicole's twenty-one-year-old son from her first marriage, Daniel, was found dead.
Speculation mounted that he had taken his own life with a cocktail of prescription drugs. It was later announced that it was an accidental death due to the cocktail of drugs. Just a few days later Anna tried to kill herself by throwing herself into the swimming pool at her home in the Bahamas but was given RSP and her life was saved. Howard K. Stern appeared on Larry King's show to discuss his claim to parentage of Dannielynn. These claims were contrary to the claims of photographer Larry Birkhead who also claimed that he is the father of the child, though Howard K. Stern was named on the child’s birth certificate as the father.
Howard K, Stern appeared in the 2004 movie Wasabi Tuna along with Anna Nicole Smith. During their period in the Bahamas, Smith was granted permanent resident status in the Bahamas by Shane Gibson. Howard K. Stern took some controversial photographs of Anna Nicole and David Shane Gibson, a member of Parliament and former cabinet minister of immigration, labour and training of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, showing Smith lying clothed in bed in an embrace with Gibson.
On February 11, 2007, the photographs were printed in several magazines and newspapers and subsequently led to Gibson’s resignation from the Bahamas Cabinet. Howard K. Stern was named as the executor of Anna Nicole Smith’s will but was contested by her mother, Virgie Arthur, who stated that the will was never filed in the courts so is not legal. Up until February 22, 2007, Anna Nicole’s body remained at the medical examiner's office in the Bahamas while Stern, Birkhead, and her mother contested the final resting place of Anna’s body.
The medical examiner has reported that the official cause of her death is still unknown. Her final burial place was announced on March 1, 2007, and Anna Nicole's body was laid to rest on Friday March 2, next to her son, Daniel, in the Bahamas. Although Stern was named as the father of Anna's baby on the child's birth certificate, finally on April 10, 2007, a court in the Bahamas ruled that Larry Birkhead is actually the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby, Dannielyn.
After the ruling Larry appeared infront of the cameras and microphones, waving the court papers, to a huge cheer from a large group of supporters who had been waiting to hear, and share his good news.
