Ice T Bio

Ice T

Ice-T was born as Tracy Morrow in 1958, in New Jersey. Both of Morrow’s parents died in a car accident when he was a young boy so he was sent to live with his extended family in South Los Angeles. During this time he became fascinated with the ghetto street life culture of the Crenshaw district and eventually joined the infamous gang, the Crips. In high school he became obsessed with rap music and would often create rhymes in school.

After Morrow graduated from Crenshaw High School he joined the U.S. Army. He was a ranger in the 25th Infantry until 1981. Overall, Morrow found the experience to be a negative one because he did not like being submissive to anyone.

After returning from service, Ice-T almost immediately began writing and recording rap music. He released his first album, The Coldest Rap, in 1982. This album was seen as the beginning of what would later be known as gangsta rap. His stage name came from the famous ex-pimp, Iceberg Slim.

After years of recording for various studios, Ice T landed a record deal with Sire Records in 1987. The following year, Ice-T created his own record label, Rhyme Syndicate, which was distributed by Sire records. That same year he released the album Power. The album went gold and cemented Ice-T into superstardom. Reviews of his album were positive and also noted the intelligence in his lyrics. His album was also political and dealt with censorship of the hip-hop genre.

He often shared his political views in his lyrics in what became known as "the Ice Opinion." Many of his views are left leaning politically, including women’s rights, leaving the ghetto, and fighting against drug use. After 1994 his music became less political and adopted more of the trends that encompassed rap music at that time.

In 1994, Ice-T wrote his own book called The Ice Opinion, in which he was very explicit in sharing his political views. Some of the chapters in his book include: "The Jungle Creed," "The Killing Fields," "Crime and Punishment," "Men, Women and Sex," "Rap: The Art of Shit Talkin’," "Religion," "One Percent Nation," "Racism, Riots and Revolution," "The Controversy," and "The Future." At the end of the book, he also included a "Pimptionary," which defined popular pimp slang.

Although Ice-T was seen as the original gangsta rapper, he also collaborated with various hard rock, metal, and punk bands. Some of the groups he worked with include: Slayer, Motorhead, Six Feat Under, and Black Flag.

On top of becoming a successful rapper, Ice-T also began starring in films in 1984. His first film was Breakin’. Other films he has participated in include: New Jack City in 1991, which co-starred Wesley Snipes and Chris Rock. He also starred in Surviving the Game in 1994, co-starring Rutger Hauer and Gary Busey. Today, Ice T is best known for his role as Detective Odafin Tutuola on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which also stars Christopher Meloni, Mariska Hargitay, and Richard Belzer. Ice-T has been involved with the crime show since 2000.
