James Pickens Jr.James Pickens Jr. isn’t a doctor, but he plays one on TV. He’s a veteran actor with an acting career than has spanned nearly three decades and, at the age of fifty-one, James Pickens Jr. reached his prime when he acquired the role of Dr. Richard Webber in the ABC hit drama series, Grey’s Anatomy. Pickens may be best known for this role, but he has accumulated an impressive list of television and movie roles on his acting resume.
James Pickens Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 26, 1954. He got his start in acting in the 1980s on the stages of New York, where he was seen in several notable performances including the Negro Ensemble Company’s A Soldier’s Story, where he performed opposite Denzel Washington and Samuel L Jackson. He also appeared in Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun when the production celebrated its 25th anniversary.
By 1990, Pickens had moved to California in pursuit of television and movie roles. His first recurring television role was in Fox’s Beverly Hills 90210, where he appeared in more than one episode as Henry Thomas. This was followed by several single appearances on numerous television shows including Doogie Howser, M.D., L.A. Law, and Murder, She Wrote. His biggest recurring television role came in 1994 when he was cast as the character Chuck Mitchell on Roseanne, starring Roseanne, John Goodman, and Laurie Metcalf. He gained notable attention as a television actor, appearing in nearly twenty episodes of the hit comedy sitcom.
After Roseanne, Pickens’s television acting career picked up and he had recurring roles on The Practice, Philly, The Lyon’s Den, The X-Files, and HBO’s Six Feet Under. Pickens has also appeared in a multitude of films including Nixon, Sleepers, The Ghosts of Mississippi, and Steven Soderbergh’s award-winning Traffic.
In 2005, at the age of fifty-one, Pickens landed the groundbreaking role as the Chief of Surgery on Grey’s Anatomy. As Dr. Richard Webber, Pickens lends an affectation of maturity, leadership, and wisdom to the show’s cast, which also includes Ellen Pompeo, Patrick Dempsey, George O’Malley, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, TR Knight, Chandra Wilson, Isaiah Washington, Chandra Wilson, and Kate Walsh.
With his recurring role on the successful series, Pickens has little time for other venues, but he’s sure to be around on one screen or the other for at least a little while. When he’s not acting, he indulges in personal interests, is an avid horse enthusiast and rider and has competed in rodeo roping events. YUDDY |
