Jane Austen Bio

Jane Austen  (Deceased)

Although born in a time gone by, in period where her writings were fairly well received, this writer of a total of six masterpieces has played a constant part in every century’s culture on both sides of the Atlantic and as far away as India, since the 1700’s. Loved by the young, the old, male and females alike her writings have supplied the basis of many a Hollywood blockbuster starring such actors as Keira Knightley, Donald Sutherland, Kate Winslet and Hugh grant.

Jane Austen was born on December 16th 1775 in the village of Stevenson, Hampshire in England. The daughter of the Reverend George Austen and his wife Cassandra, Jane was one of two sisters, herself and her elder sister Cassandra, named after her mother, as was the tradition in those days, and five brothers, James, Henry, Francis, Charlie and George who was disabled and did not live with the family.

Jane began her first novel in 1789 and during her forty one years she penned six novels mostly based on the limited provincial world in which she lived for the first twenty-six years of her life.

Jane’s first published novel was ‘Northanger Abbey’ in 1798 followed by ‘Sense and Sensibility’ in 1811, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in 1813, ‘Mansfield Park’ in 1814 followed by one of her most famous novels ‘Emma’ in 1816. Her final novel ‘Persuasion’ was penned in her final years and published posthumously in 1818.

With the movie and television revolution of the 19th century, Jane’s novels have been adapted into a great number of movies both for television and for the big screen such as ‘Pride and Prejudice’ in 1995 which was a TV serial in the UK and starred Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. In the 1940 movie version of the ‘Emma’ the role of Mr Darcy was given to Laurence Olivier.

1995 was the year that brought ‘Sense and Sensibility’ to the big screen with Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson starring as the Dashwood sisters and Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars. British actor Alan Rickman was cast as Colonel Brandon in this most successful movie. Her fourth novel ‘Emma’ saw the starring role going to Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northern as Knightley. The same novel was adapted for TV in the UK and the starring role went to Kate Beckinsale.

The novels of Jane Austen have even made their way into Indian culture with their own variation on the plot with the leading lady being played by Aishwarya Rai. August 2007 was the release date for the movie ‘Becoming Jane’ which cast Anne Hathaway in the lead as Jane and the young love of her life, Tom Lefoy portrayed by James McAvoy.

Following the release of the movie ‘Becoming Jane’ the American audiences would later be treated to ‘The Jane Austen Book Club’, a movie starring Amy Brenneman, of ‘Judging Amy’ fame, Emily Blunt, Jimmy Smits and Lynn Redgrave. The plot of the movie is based around a group of six Californians who start a club to discuss the works of Jane Austen, only to find their relationships, both old and new, begin to resemble 21st century versions of Jane’s novels.

Jane herself lived most of her life in the Hampshire countryside in England with a brief spell in the spa city of Bath. As with most people of her period her life was not long and she died on July 18th 1817 at the age of forty one, never having married or had children

Jane was interred at Winchester Cathedral, Hampshire, England the building used as a film set for ‘The Da Vinci Code’ in 2006 which starred Tom Hanks.
