In high school, Jason was a huge fan of Star Trek. For his birthday one year his friends blindfolded him and sat him down at a restaurant in town. When he removed the blindfold William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk on Star Trek, was sitting in front of him. Jason has since appeared on the Howard Stern Show and received a perfect score on the Star Trek trivia game Howard created on air.
After Jason graduated high school in 1977, he attended Boston University, but he left during his senior year after getting some acting work in New York City. The university later gave him an honorary degree.
In 1981, Alexander married Daena Title. The couple is still married and has two children together, Gabriel, born in 1991; and Noah, born in 1996.
Shortly after moving to New York, Alexander began to get roles in off Broadway plays, his first being Forbidden Broadway. Other parts quickly followed, including Merrily We Roll Along, The Rink, and Sweeny Todd. In 1989, Alexander won a Tony award for his starring role in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.
In 1990, Alexander was cast as George Costanza on the hit television comedy Seinfeld, in which he played Jerry Seinfeld’s best friend. Other members of the award-winning cast include Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards. To make Alexander’s character look un-cool on the show, he was always fitted with a suit that was one size too small. The award-winning show ended in 1998. This has been, by far, Jason’s most recognizable role.
Although working in films has not been Alexander’s main focus in his career, he has been a part of a few movies, including: North in 1994, which co-starred Bruce Willis, Elijah Wood, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. He also had a role in Shallow Hal in 2001, which starred Jack Black.
Currently, Jason is the national Spokesman for the Scleroderma Foundation. The goals of the organization are to raise awareness and assist those who suffer from the disease. Alexander also continues to perform on Broadway and even debuted his own magic and mentalist act in April of 2006 at the World Famous Magic Castle in Hollywood.
