Patric went to school at Don Bosco Preparatory School in New Jersey. He then attended high school in Santa Monica, California, at St. Monica Roman Catholic High School. While still in school he developed his passion for acting, performing in the high school productions of Dracula and Grease.
Shortly after graduating high school, Patric was cast in the television drama Toughlove in 1985. After his success in TV, he was cast in Solarbabies in 1986, co-starring Lukas Haas and Jami Gertz. Throughout the rest of the 1980s Jason worked on and off participating in several films.
In the early 1990s, Jason’s best friend was Kiefer Sutherland who was engaged to Julia Roberts. When their engagement was broken off, Jason and Julia fled to Europe where the couple pursued their own relationship. The outrageous paparazzi coverage about their relationship was a shock to Jason, who had spent years cultivating an anonymous career. The ultimate undoing of the relationship was the relentless press and Jason’s life being cast into the public eye.
In 1996 Jason starred in his next major film, Sleepers, co-starring Brad Pitt, Robert De Niro, Kevin Bacon, and Dustin Hoffman. This was followed up by one of the most commercial films of Jason’s career, Speed 2: Cruise Control in 1997. The film co-starred Sandra Bullock. When asked why he decided to do this film, which was a total departure from his meatier roles and independent films, Jason replied that the money he made from Speed 2: Cruise Control was enough to film his own independent film, Your Friends and Neighbors, which he did in 1998. Jason starred in and produced the film.
Jason Patric is famous for turning down major roles in films that are too commercial for his tastes. A couple of the films he has turned down include The Firm in 1993, and his part was later given to Tom Cruise. He also turned down the role are Jesus Christ in The Passion of the Christ in 2004, produced by Mel Gibson. The part ended up going to Jim Caviezel.
In 2005, Patric signed on to star in the Broadway rendition of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, playing the character, Brick. Also starring in the play is Ashley Judd, Ned Beatty, and Margo Martindale.
Patric’s last major film was The Alamo in 2004, which co-starred Dennis Quaid and Billy Bob Thornton. Patric’s character died in the film, and to make the death scene look more believable, he took shots of Tabasco Sauce between takes. The films opening weekend was at the same time as Passion of the Christ, written and directed by Mel Gibson. It crushed The Alamo in the box office. The film was a flop commercially, grossing only $26 million worldwide. The film cost over $140 million to produce and market.
