Jennifer Jason LeighAmerican actress Jennifer Jason Leigh may not be a household name like many performers, but she does have an undeniable talent for portraying shocking characters. In 1992 she showed this talent to the fullest by playing Hedy, the psychopathic roommate in Single White Female. But although Single White Female may be the movie she’s best known for acting in, it wasn’t the first movie Jennifer performed in.
Born as Jennifer Lee Morrow on February 5, 1962, in Hollywood, California, to actor Vic Morrow and screenwriter Barbara Turner, Jennifer got her first film credit when she was fourteen and appeared in a non-speaking role in Death of a Stranger (also known as The Spy Who Never Was).
Jennifer, who changed her name in honor of family friend and actor, Jason Robards, lost her father in 1982 when he was decapitated in a freak helicopter accident on the set of Twilight Zone: The Movie. This was also the same year that Jennifer played a virgin who gets pregnant in the high school comedy, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She acted with then unknown future stars, Sean Penn and Nicolas Cage.
During her teen years Jennifer attended acting classes at the Lee Strasberg Institute and Stagedoor Manor, an acting camp for teens in New York. In 1977 she became a member of the Screen Actors Guild after she appeared in an episode of the television show, Baretta.
Jennifer received her first major speaking role in Disney's 1978 made-for-TV movie The Young Runaways.
She then appeared in several television movies including Angel City in 1980, The Killing of Randy Webster in 1981, and The Best Little Girl in the World in 1981. For The Best Little Girl in the World she dropped down to eighty-six pounds under medical supervision to play the part of an anorexic teenager.
Jennifer made her screen debut in the 1980 slasher film, Eyes of a Stranger (which she dropped out of high school six weeks before her graduation in order to pursue) where she played a blind, deaf, and mute rape victim. She was later quoted as saying she remembered the movie as "a horrible, horrible film."
Throughout the remainder of the 1980s and 1990s Jennifer appeared in numerous roles, including Grandview, U.S.A. in 1984, The Hitcher in 1986, Sister, Sister in 1987, Rush in 1991, Backdraft in 1991, Single White Female in 1992, and Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle in 1994. She received a Golden Globe nomination and Best Actress award from the National Society of Film Critics, Chicago Film Critics Association, and Fort Lauderdale Film Critics for her convincing impersonation of the real Dorothy Parker.
In 1989 Harper’s Bazaar magazine selected Jennifer as one of America’s 10 Most Beautiful Women. In 1994 Vogue complimented Jennifer’s acting skills by writing that she "has an extraordinary range and power." In 2002 she received a special award for her contribution to independent cinema from the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
The same year Jennifer appeared in Road to Perdition, starring Tom Hanks. She followed this up with roles in the movies In the Cut in 2003, starring Meg Ryan, Palindromes in 2004, and The Jacket.
In 2005 she appeared in Rag Tale and Lymelife, with Alec Baldwin.
Jennifer has been romantically involved with actors Eric Stoltz, Jason Patric, and David Dukes. She married her boyfriend of four years, writer and director Noah Baumbach, on September 3, 2005. YUDDY |
