Jesse Metcalfe was born on December 9, 1978, in Valley, California, an only child. Metcalfe spent his teenage years in Waterford, Connecticut, playing basketball in several different leagues. After high school, he attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, which over the years has seen many notable alumni (graduates and non-graduates alike), including Woody Allen, Whoopi Goldberg, Angelina Jolie, Martin Scorsese, Marisa Tomei, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Debra Messing, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Bell, Selma Blair, Alexis Bledel, Billy Crystal, Bridget Fonda, Anne Hathaway, Ethan Hawke, Adam Sandler, M Night Shyamalan, and many more.
However, Metcalfe dropped out of Tisch School of the Arts and moved to L.A. to focus on pursuing a career in writing and directing, although he ended up embarking on an acting career instead. His first role was as Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald, a role he played on and off from 1999 until 2004, on the hit NBC soap opera Passions. He also guest starred twice in 2003 and 2004 on the WB’s Smallville, a TV show about Clark Kent’s life as a teenager/young adult. Metcalfe’s role there was as Van McNulty, a meteor freak hunter.
But Metcalfe’s big break on the small screen came when he was cast as the young and smokin’ hot gardener, John Rowland, on Desperate Housewives in 2004. He soon enjoyed sex symbol status for his on-screen illicit relationship with Eva Longoria’s married character, Gabrielle Solis, and for almost always appearing shirtless, which showed off his toned body to a particular advantage.
Also on TV, Metcalfe has appeared twice as a victim on Ashton Kutcher’s Punk’d, the famous celebrity pranking series.
He first starred on the big screen in 2006 in the romantic teen comedy John Tucker Must Die as the title role, a rich, spoiled, three-timing player. His co-stars were Brittany Snow, singer Ashanti, Sophia Bush (from One Tree Hill), Arielle Kebbel (who guest starred on Gilmore Girls), Jenny McCarthy, and Penn Badgley.
Metcalfe is also known for his publicized on-and-off relationship with Nadine Coyle, from the famous British girl band, Girls Aloud.
