Jessica LangeAcademy Award-winning Actress Jessica Lange was born on April 20, 1949, in Cloquet, Minnesota. As the daughter of a traveling salesman, Jessica moved at least eighteen times growing up. For two years, Jessica attended the University of Minnesota, where she studied art. Eventually she made her way to Paris to study miming and dance in the chorus of the Opera Comique. Next, Lange moved to New York, where she landed a role in Dino De Laurentiis’ 1976 remake of King Kong. Although Lange’s acting efforts were panned by critics, she used the next three years until her next film role wisely, spending her time studying drama and networking with contacts in the industry.
In 1979, Jessica was cast as the angel of death in All That Jazz in 1979, and became involved with the film’s choreographer and director Bob Fosse. Jessica’s breakthrough role came in 1981 when she was cast opposite Jack Nicholson in Bob Rafelson's The Postman Always Rings Twice. The following year, she was cast in what she considers to be her favorite role, as actress Frances Farmer in Frances. It was at this time that Lange met actor and playwright Sam Shepard, with whom she would have two children – daughter, Hannah Jane in 1985, and son, Walker Samuel in 1987. Lange had previously been married to photographer Paco Grande from 1970 to 1981, and also had a relationship with dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, with whom she had a daughter, Alexandra, in 1981.
In 1982, Lange acted opposite Dustin Hoffman in the romantic comedy Tootsie, for which she earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Jessica enjoyed more success throughout the 80s, receiving Best Actress nominations three more times for the films Sweet Dreams in 1984 and The Music Box in 1989. She eventually won the Best Actress award for her performance in Blue Sky in 1994.
Throughout her film career, Lange has also intermittently appeared on stage. In 1991 she starred opposite Alec Baldwin in a Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire. In 1995, she returned to play the character of Blanche Dubois again in a TV version of the play, for which she received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special at the 2006 Emmy Awards.
Also in 1995, Jessica appeared in Rob Roy with Liam Neeson, and Losing Isaiah with Halle Berry. In 1997, she starred alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michelle Pfeiffer in the film adaptation of Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres. Two years later, Lange joined another cast of Hollywood heavyweights including Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Titus (1999).
In 2003, Jessica starred in Tim Burton's whimsical Big Fish, alongside Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, and Danny DeVito. 2005 was a busy year for Lange – she starred in The Needs of Kim Stanley, Broken Flowers, Don't Come Knocking, and Neverwas.
In 2002, Lange’s accomplishments were acknowledged with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the San Sebastian Film Festival in Spain. Foregoing the traditional acceptance speech, Lange lashed out at the president and the war on Iraq, proclaiming, "I despise him, I despise his administration and everything they stand for," referring to President George W Bush and his administration.
Lange is currently a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF, and has also lent her voice to raise awareness of HIV-positive children in Russia and the Monks of Nepal. YUDDY |
