Joan Baez Bio

Joan Baez

American folk singer and activist, Joan Baez was born Joan Chandos Baez on January 9, 1941 in Staten Island, New York. Born into a family of the Quaker faith, Baez’s father was a physicist of Mexican descent, and her mother was of West-European descent. Growing up, Baez was exposed to classical music; however she opted to play rock and roll on her guitar rather than taking piano lessons. After graduating from high school in Palo Alto, California in 1958, Baez moved with her family to Boston, where she became interested in the local folk music scene.

Baez attended Boston University for a brief period, and broadened her repertoire to include singing Anglo-American ballads, blues, spirituals, and international songs in addition to folk music. It was at this time that she began garnering the attention of other folk singers such as Harry Belafonte, who asked her to sing with his group.Baez’s breakthrough performance came in the summer of 1959, when she was invited to sing at the Newport Rhode Island Folk Festival. She developed a huge folk following from her exposure; however, Baez opted to continue playing in Boston coffee shops versus signing with a major record label at that time. After performing at the festival a second time the following year, Baez made her debut self-titled album with Vanguard Records.

She followed-up with tours of college campuses, concert halls, and foreign countries to promote the album. The 60s saw Baez using her voice for political protesting, speaking out against taxes used for war purposes and the Vietnam War draft. She also found support amongst fellow celebrity and anti-war activist, Jane Fonda in her anti-war initiatives. In 1968, Baez married draft dodger, David Harris, with whom she had a son, Gabriel, in April 1969. Three months later, her husband was arrested for refusing induction into the military forces, and served 20 months in a federal prison in Texas.By the mid-80s, Baez had adopted a more mainstream style of dress and deeper voice; however she retained her social conscience as the head of the Humanitas International Human Rights Committee. She continued to release albums during the decade, including the Grammy-nominated 1988 song Asimbonanga.

In 1993, Refugees International invited Baez to visit Bosnia-Herzegovina to assist with war relief. Also in 1993, she became the first major artist to perform in a professional concert at former Federal Penitentiary, Alcatraz, as part of a benefit concert for her sister Mimi Farina's organization, Bread & Roses. In 1996, she returned to Alcatraz to perform alongside the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams.

Joan has been covering songs by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Jackson Browne, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder for years with her own interpretation on the originals.

Baez has also been an active supporter of gay and lesbian rights, performing in 1995 at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force's "Fight the Right" fund-raising event held in San Francisco.
