Joe Pesci Bio

|
|
Joe Pesci He’s that short, funny, grouchy Italian American actor who is known for often being typecast as a mobster and for working alongside fellow actor Robert De Niro numerous times on film.
Joe (Joseph) Pesci, at five feet, four inches, and now into his sixties, was born in Newark, New Jersey on February 9, 1943. He got started in the world of show business in the 1960s, singing and playing guitar in various local nightclubs, supporting himself as a barber and waiter. Under the name Joseph Richie, Pesci released his own album, Little Joe Sure Can Sing, with the help of a band that included Frank Vincent, Pesci’s friend and then-future actor.
His debut role on film was an extra on Hey, Let’s Twist in 1961, starring Joey Dee, frontman of hit 60s band Joey Dee and the Starliters. Pesci also appeared in 1969’s Out Of It, featuring Jon Voight and Al Pacino, and he also starred in The Death Collector in 1976, before landing his breakthrough role as Joey La Motta in director Martin Scorsese’s Raging Bull in 1980, co-starring Robert De Niro, Cathy Moriarty, and Frank Vincent.
Joe Pesci became known for working in subsequent films with De Niro, including Once Upon a Time in America in 1984, Goodfellas in 1990, and Casino in 1995. The duo became so famous it propelled the creation of a recurring sketch on Saturday Night Live—"The Joe Pesci Show."
Pesci also became renowned for his work in other major films, including the original Home Alone in 1990 as well as its sequel in 1992, co-starring Macaulay Culkin, Daniel Stern, Catherine O Hara, and John Heard, as well as in Oliver Stone’s JFK in 1991, with a stellar cast including Kevin Costner, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Gary Oldman, and Sissy Spacek; My Cousin Vinny in 1992, with Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei; and the last three of the four Lethal Weapon movies.
For his work in Goodfellas, Pesci was honored with the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the award which was preceded by Denzel Washington for Glory in 1989 and succeeded by Jack Palance for City Slickers in 1991. Pesci’s entire acceptance speech was merely "This is an honor and a privilege. Thank you very much" because, as Pesci reportedly mentioned later, he wasn’t prepared as he wasn’t expecting to win.
His last official film was 1998’s Lethal Weapon 4, after which Pesci announced his retirement from acting in order to pursue a music career. However, he is appearing alongside De Niro again, as well as Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie, in De Niro’s The Good Shepherd in 2006. YUDDY |
