Joey Lawrence Bio

Joey Lawrence

Joseph Lawrence Mignogna Jr. was born April 20, 1976, in Abington, Pennsylvania. Lawrence caught the acting bug from an early age, and began pursuing his dream almost immediately. He broke his way into television in 1982 beside Bob Denver (of Gilligan’s Island) for the comedy-short, Scamps. He worked small television and film roles, but his career was dominated by bit parts and less than noteworthy roles.

But everything changed for Joey Lawrence in 1990 when he landed a lead role in the new television series Blossom. Playing the less-than-brainy-brother Joey Russo, Lawrence became famous for his oft quoted catchphrase, "Whoa." The show, which starred Mayim Bialik, ran successfully from 1990 to 1995.

During this time, Lawrence decided to capitalize on his newfound fame. In 1993, he released his debut album entitled Joey Lawrence. The album’s single "Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix" peaked on the charts at #19. The album also produced two more singles. Failing to capture the success of his first song, they barely made it into the top 50. Lawrence released another album four years later, but it never materialized to any real degree of success.

After Blossom’s demise, Lawrence jumped on board another television sitcom entitled Brotherly Love. Keeping it all in the family, the show starred all three real-life Lawrence brothers—Joey, Matthew Lawrence, and Andrew Lawrence. The show was considered average across the board, and it only survived from 1995 to 1997.

Getting older and unable to fulfill the teen heartthrob role any longer, Lawrence found his career sputtering. In 1999 he landed a role in the film Desperate But Not Serious, with Christine Taylor, Paget Brewster, and John Corbett, but the low-budget film barely made a splash.

Lawrence cropped up in films here and there over the next few years, sometimes with some success (Horse Sense) and sometimes not (Tequila Body Shots). His most commercial success came in 2000 with Urban Legends: Final Cut, although the film was widely panned. In 2001, Lawrence proved loath to leave the slasher genre when he released Do You Wanna Know a Secret? Unfortunately, it was even more poorly received than his previous work.

But Lawrence refused to fade into early 90s obscurity. He landed an eleven-episode stint on the popular television series American Dreams and a run of nine episodes in Half and Half. Lawrence has found himself thrust into the limelight yet again after sporting his new look (shaved head and pierced ears) during a cameo for Ice Breakers gum. Beside sisters Hilary Duff and Haylie Duff, Lawrence delighted fans by reciting his famous catchphrase, "Whoa" at the commercial’s conclusion. He was also a contestant on the 2006 Dancing with the Stars competition.

Lawrence has been married twice. His first marriage was to Michelle Vella from 2002 to 2004 when the couple divorced. His second marriage is to Chandie Yawn Nelson. The couple wed in 2005, and they are currently still together. They have one daughter.
