John GrishamLegal literati John Grisham was born on February 8, 1965, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Growing up, John and his family moved around for his father’s job as an itinerant construction worker. They lived in five different cities before eventually settling in Southaven, Mississippi, when John was twelve years old. From a young age, John enjoyed reading, and his love of author John Steinbeck’s work inspired him to dream of one day becoming a writer. However, John also enjoyed sports, and harbored dreams of playing professional baseball. After spending one year on the baseball team at Northwest Mississippi Junior College in Senatobia, John transferred to Delta State. However, it seemed that John’s sports skills had waned; he could no longer hit a fastball and had somehow become fearful of curveballs. John decided to hang up his uniform and leave Delta to attend Mississippi State University.
While at Mississippi State, John began pursuing academics more seriously. He switched majors from economics to accounting, initially planning on becoming a tax lawyer. Meanwhile, John devoured the latest bestsellers, eventually deciding to try his own hand at writing a novel. Although he did not complete this first foray into writing, the endeavor did get John into the habit of keeping a journal of story ideas. John graduated in 1977 with a bachelor's degree with honors in accounting before going on to attend law school at University of Mississippi.
After earning his J.D. in 1981, John returned to Southaven, where he opened a private practice. As a successful civil lawyer, John was dissatisfied with his career. He ventured into politics, winning a seat in the Mississippi State Legislature in 1983. One year later, John sat down again to write a novel; this time inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old rape victim. Now a disciplined writer, John woke up at dawn every day for three years to write before heading off to his practice. His manuscript, A Time to Kill, was bought by a small press and published with a circulation of only 5,000 copies.
Under the guidelines of Writer's Digest, John composed his next novel, The Firm, about a Harvard law grad entangled in the Memphis mob. While John peddled the manuscript to publishers, he was unaware that a bootleg copy had begun circulating around Hollywood, eventually making its way to Paramount, which offered him $600,000 dollars for the film rights. Publishers then took notice, and the novel went on to become a New York Times bestseller for forty-seven weeks, as well as a big-screen success, starring Hollywood heavyweights Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, and Holly Hunter.
After selling The Firm, John closed his law practice and stepped down from his legislative post to begin writing full-time. Nicknamed Hurricane Grisham, John penned an average of one book per year, to the delight of movie studios that snatched up the film rights to his stories before they were even completed.
In 1992, John’s third novel, The Pelican Brief, became the year’s longest-running hardcover bestseller. Its film adaptation starred Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.
John followed-up with The Client in 1994, which was also adapted to a film starring Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones. Next came The Chamber, which spawned a film starring Chris O Donnell and Gene Hackman. John’s other writings, which have been adapted to film, include The Rainmaker in 1997, The Gingerbread Man in 1998, and his first original screenplay to be made into a feature, Mickey in 2002).
"The bestselling novelist of the 90s," as declared by Publishers Weekly, has claimed that he still has ambitions of coaching baseball. John is active in the sport by serving as local Little League commissioner as well as owning six baseball fields, which have hosted over 350 young players.
Raised a southern Baptist, John is also active in his church, and has performed mission services in Brazil. He lives with his wife, Renée, and their two children, Ty and Shea, on a farm outside Oxford, as well as on a plantation near Charlottesville. YUDDY |
