John Hannah Bio

John Hannah Biography

Scottish actor John Hannah made his first big splash with the popular comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral. Since, he has become most associated with The Mummy franchise, Sliding Doors, and Cold Blood.

John David Hannah was born April 23, 1962 in East Kilbride, Scotland. He is one of three children. His parents were Susan Hannah and John Hannah, a cleaner and toolmaker respectively.

On the education front, Hannah attended Claremont High School. Upon graduating, Hannah became an electrician’s apprentice.

Always interested in acting, Hannah was simultaneously involved in the East Kilbride Rep Theatre Club. Completing his apprenticeship, Hannah was encouraged to apply to the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Taking the advice, he was accepted and completed his studies with the prestigious program.

Working bit parts in regional theater, Hannah’s onscreen debut eventually came in 1987 with Bookie.

Work was sparse for Hannah, however, until 1994. In that year, he received a considerable career boost with a supporting role in Mike Newell’s romantic comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral. Stars included Hugh Grant, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Andie MacDowell.

The following year, Hannah had a recurring role on the television series Out of the Blue. The short-lived series starred Orla Brady.

From 1995 to 1998, he also played Dr. Iain McCallum on the short-lived but well received series entitled McCallum.

Returning to commercial film in 1998, Hannah had a costarring role in the romantic comedy Sliding Doors with Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeanne Tripplehorn.

Transitioning to action flicks, Hannah switched gears to appear in 1999’s The Mummy with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Hannah reprised his role in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. More recently, he once again took to the screen for 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Returning to familiar territory, Hannah appeared in the 2002 romantic comedy I’m With Lucy. The feel good film starred Monica Potter, Gael Garcia Bernal, Anthony LaPaglia, and David Boreanaz.

Others may recognize Hannah for his work with the Cold Blood series. Playing Jake Osbourne, Hannah’s first appearance in this role came with the show’s debut in 2005. He reprised his role in each subsequent sequel. The latest installment came in 2008 with Cold Blood 5: The Last Hurrah.

In his personal life, Hannah married fellow actress Joanna Roth on January 20, 1996. They welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, on February 11, 2004. Roth and Hannah are currently still together.

Outside of acting, Hannah is noted for his continued contributions and works with various charitable organizations.
