John Lithgow Bio

John Lithgow

John Lithgow was born on October 19, 1945, in Rochester, New York. From the time he was born, acting was in his blood. His mother, Sarah Jane Price, was a retired actress. His father, Arthur Washington Lithgow, was a theatrical producer and director. Lithgow’s family moved a lot when John was growing up, due to his father’s job.

After graduating from Princeton High School in New Jersey, John won a scholarship to attend Harvard University. At college, some of his dorm neighbors included roommates Al Gore and Tommy Lee Jones. Lithgow graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1967 with a Bachelor’s in history and literature.

Prior to graduating, in 1966 Lithgow married his first wife, Jean Taynton. The couple has one son together, Ian, born in 1972, who has often made appearances on John’s shows. Taynton and Lithgow divorced in 1980.

After graduating Harvard, Lithgow received the Fulbright Scholarship to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. After returning from London he decided to pursue acting full time.

Jon first appeared on Broadway in 1973 in the play, The Changing Room. He earned a Tony award for Best Supporting or Featured Actor. Lithgow’s film career began to heat up in 1983 when he starred in The World According to Garp with Robin Williams. His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He then starred in Terms of Endearment in 1984 with Shirley MacLaine, Danny DeVito, and Jack Nicholson.

In 1981, Lithgow married his second wife, Mary Yeager, who is a professor of economics at UCLA. The couple had their first daughter, Phoebe, in 1982. Their son, Nathan George, was born in 1983. They remain married to this day. Today, they reside in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Lithgow starred in several TV movies and shows, including The Day After in 1984 and Resting Place in 1986, both of which earned him Emmy awards.

Lithgow is perhaps best known for starring in the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun, which ran from 1996 to 2001, playing the alien turned professor, Rick Solomon. His co-stars included Kristen Johnston, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and French Stewart. Out of the six seasons on the show, Lithgow was nominated for an Emmy award all six times for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and won three of those times in 1996, 1997, and 1999. His son, Ian, had a recurring role as one of his students on the show.

Lithgow has continued to be a success in films, on television, and on the stage. He was the voice of Yoda in the Star Wars Trilogy. He is also slated to do a new television sitcom for NBC in 2007 called Twenty Good Years. The show will co-star Jeffrey Tambor, Heather Burns, and Jake Sandvig. Lithgow was also voted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2005 for his success on Broadway. On top of all of that, Lithgow had brief success as a recording artist, coming out with his own album, entitled Singin’ in the Bathtub in 1999.
