John MalkovichJohn Malkovich was born on December 9, 1953, in Christopher, Illinois. His father was the state conservation director and his mother owned an evening news station. The entire Malkovich family is widely recognized for bringing the environmental movement to Illinois.
As a kid, Malkovich was overweight. At the age of sixteen he decided to turn that around and ate nothing but Jell-O for two months. The diet resulted in him losing over seventeen pounds.
In high school, Malkovich became a star athlete. After graduating he enrolled in Eastern Illinois University, but then transferred to Illinois State University. His original major was ecology, but he caught the acting bug and changed majors to theater. Malkovich never received his diploma because he failed to meet one final requirement for graduation, the U.S. Constitution test. When speaking at the university in 2005 he was awarded an honorary diploma in theater.
Malkovitch dropped out of college to pursue acting full time. To support himself he held a series of odd jobs including school bus driver, house painter, landscaper, and office supply store employee. He became a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in 1976.
In 1982, John married actress Glenne Headly. They divorced in 1988, and Malkovich briefly dated Michelle Pfeiffer.
In 1983, Malkovitch moved to New York City. His first play in the city was True West. In 1984, he got his first starring role on Broadway alongside Dustin Hoffman in Death of a Salesman. The play eventually became a TV movie with Malkovich playing the lead role, which earned him his first Emmy award.
Malkovich’s first film was Places in the Heart in 1984, co-starring Danny Glover, Ed Harris, and Sally Field. His role earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Malkovitch was listed as one of the most promising actors of 1984.
In 1989, after Malkovich moved to France, he married his second wife, Nicoletta Peyron. The couple has two children together. The first was Amandine, born in 1990, and the second was Lorwy, born in 1992. The couple remains married to this day and currently reside in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Other films Malkovich has starred in include In the Line of Fire in 1993, co-starring Rene Russo, Clint Eastwood, and Dylan McDermott. The role earned him another Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Malkovitch also starred as the villain in Con Air in 1997, alongside Nicolas Cage and John Cusack, and Being John Malkovich in 1999, co-starring Cameron Diaz, John Cusack, and Catherine Keener. Malkovich was the first actor to win an award for playing himself in a movie. His most recent film appearance was in Art School Confidential in 2006. YUDDY |
