John Roberts With such a serious, litigious and educated career it is hard to believe that a man such as John Roberts would be enjoying himself at a barbeque with friends on a weekend. But that’s exactly what he was doing when he took a tumble which saw him hospitalized with a suspected seizure in late July 2007. John Roberts was born in Buffalo, New York on January 27th 1955 to parents, John and Rosemary who were both of Czechoslovakian heritage. During his formative years the Roberts’ moved to Indiana taking their four children, John, Kathy, Peggy and Barbara.Coming from a Catholic family it was inevitable that John would attend catholic schools in the area, The Notre Dame Elementary and then La Lumiere School, which was a boarding school in Indiana. He was an exceptional student both academically and in athletics. John became involved in just about every aspect of school life from captaining the football team, to co-editing the school newspaper to serving on the Executive Committee of the Student Council. His academic studies were also varied. He studied both French and Latin for two years. After graduating from high school his education took him to the Sacred Heart University and then on to Harvard College. He graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in history. His next step in his education was to attend Harvard Law School from where he graduated in 1979.Following the completion of his education John married his wife Jane Sullivan who is was originally from Irish heritage and is also a lawyer in Washington D.C.
One of Roberts firsts appointments was to served as a law clerk for Judge Henry Friendly on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals for one year and from 1980 to 1981, he clerked for then-Associate Justice William Rehnquist on the United States Supreme Court. 1982 saw John serving as a Special Assistant to the U.S. Attorney General during the Ronald Reagan administration. It was in 1992 that John Roberts began his climb to the position he now holds when he was nominated by George H W Bush to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. When the Bush administration came to an end after he lost the 1992 presidential elections to Bill Clinton Roberts’ position also ended and he returned to his original employment at Hogan & Harston, this time as a partner. In 1993 Roberts suffered a seizure which was never attributed to any specific cause and apart from limiting his driving and some of his activities he made no changes to his life at all. So during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearings for his nomination as Chief Justice in 2005, no relevance was placed on this past seizure. In 2000 John and Jane adopted two children from Ireland, Josephine and later, Jack. The two children are not related by birth. In July 2005 President George W Bush nominated Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court when a vacancy arose after the retirement of Sandra O’Connor. But following the sudden death of William H Rehnquist in September 2005 Bush withdrew his nomination for Roberts and re-nominated him for the new position of Chief Justice and after Bush requested that the Senate expedite his confirmation, Roberts nomination was approved by the end of September 2005.
At 50 years old, Roberts became the youngest Chief Justice since John Marshall took the bench in 1801 at the age of 45. On July 30th 2007, John Roberts suffered another seizure similar to the one he had experience din 1993 while entertaining friends at his vacation home in St. George, Maine. This time the seizure saw him falling down a number of steps and experiencing several minor bruises and cuts. Once again the doctors could not attribute the seizure to any specific cause and referred to it as a benign idiopathic seizure, which means there were no physiological causes. Federal judges are not required to release information regarding their health and previous existing illnesses. ABB |
