Stamos was born in Cypress, California. His mother was Loretta Phillips who emigrated from Ireland. His father, William John Stamos, was a restaurant owner from Greece. Growing up, the Stamos family attended the Disciple of Christ church, where Stamos continues to attend today. He has two sisters, Janeen and Alaina, who both became school teachers.
Prior to starring in Full House, Stamos began his acting career on the television soap opera General Hospital. His character’s name was Blackie Parrish and Stamos held this role for two years and won two Soap Opera Digest Awards in 1982 and 1983 for his performance. Demi Moore was one of his co-stars on the show, whom he dated for a while.
Following his eight season run on Full House, Stamos starred in a number of made for TV movies, a number of stage productions, and commercials. His most famous series of commercials was for the long-distance carrier 10-10-987 back in 2004. Like his character Jesse on Full House, Stamos is also a musician. In the past, he has occasionally gone on tour as the drummer for the Beach Boys. He also directed their music video for the single "Hot Fun in the Summertime" in 1985.
Most of his more recent work has been a return to stage productions and Broadway. In 1995 Stamos starred in the production of How to Succeed in the Business Without Really Trying! The show showcased both his dancing and singing abilities. He also appeared as the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret.
In 2005, Stamos agreed to star in the television show Jake in Progress. The cast of the show included Ian Gomez, Rick Hoffman, and Wendie Malick. Stamos then joined the cast of ER in 2006, which will cause the cancellation of Jake in Progress.
In 1998, Stamos married former supermodel, Rebecca Romijn. They divorced in 2005. Stamos also had a relationship with Paula Abdul, the current host of American Idol, and blames the media for their breakup. Other celebrities he has dated include Denise Richards and Chelsea Noble.
