John Travolta has such an itch for entertainment that he dropped out of high school following his junior year to pursue an acting career in New York. In the big city Travolta found work with a touring production of the musical Grease and later an Off-Broadway production of Over Here. Despite success in the Big Apple John decided to move to Los Angeles in an effort to advance his career. Fortunately, his decision was a smart one.
Travolta became a star while playing the role of Vinnie Barbarino on the hit television series Welcome Back, Knotter. It was around this time that John starred in one of the most warmly received TV movies in history, The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. It was the story of a boy born without an immune system and thus is unable to live outside of an incubator. Travolta started a romance with his on-screen mother played by Diana Hyland who was eighteen years older than him. She died in 1977 of breast cancer.
His 1977 single "Let Her In" reached #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and later that year, Travolta got a chance to showcase his musical prowess in a role for which he is largely remembered. John Travolta became Tony Manero, a New York City disco king in Saturday Night Fever, whose disco dancing love interest, Stephanie, was played by Karen Lynn Gorney.
Travolta's 1980 Urban Cowboy with Debra Winger is credited with creating a country music boom in the 1980s. The 80s weren't as booming for Travolta; the success of Urban Cowboy was followed by a succession of cinematic failures and bad judgment. John turned down leads in several films that struck box office gold, American Gigolo, An Officer and A Gentleman, and Splash. Only in the late 80s did Travolta find success with Look Who's Talking, co-starring actress Kirstie Alley and the hard to die Bruce Willis.
It was 1994's Pulp Fiction, a directorial effort by Quentin Taratino, which brought Travolta back. The vehicle, also featuring Samuel L Jackson and Uma Thurman, proved that Travolta wasn't just a washed up stud of the disco era. His role as Vincent Vega earned John Travolta his first Oscar nomination.
Like entertainers Issac Hayes and Tom Cruise, John Travolta is a practicing Scientologist. His religion encouraged him to star in Battlefield Earth, a film based on the science-fiction of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard. The venture was a colossal stink bomb, managing low box office numbers and a critical spanking. On the upside, the film did win a Razzie for Worst Film of the Year.
John Travolta is married to former teen model Kelly Preston, in spite of rumors that he is a "reformed homosexual." The couple has two children, Jett and Ella. According to his parents, Jett suffers from Kawasaki disease; however, it has been rumored that the child has autism and is being denied treatment as a result of his parent's religious practices.
John is an experienced pilot and owns five planes. He is also a frequent guest on Oprah, hosted by Oprah Winfrey.
