Johnny Lee Miller Bio

Johnny Lee Miller Biography

English actor Johnny Lee Miller got his first big break with 1995’s Hackers. Since, he has won notable roles in everything from Trainspotting to Eli Stone.

Jonathan Lee Miller, often billed as Johnny Lee Miller, was born November 15, 1972 in Kingston upon Thames, South West London, England. His parents were Anne Lee and Alan Miller, a theatre producer and actor respectively. Seemingly destined for acting, Miller’s grandfather was Bernard Lee, most known for portraying M in the various James Bond films.

Miller obtained his initial education from Tiffin Boys’ School, and it was here he began pursuing his onstage endeavors. Miller left school when he was seventeen, however, in order to focus on his emerging career in acting.

Getting started early, Miller made his onstage debut when he was only eleven years old. He took the roles of Charles Prince in the television miniseries Mansfield Park.

But his first notable role was as Jonathan Hewitt in the popular British soap opera EastEnders. He appeared from 1993 to 1994, during which time he shared the screen with Michelle Collins and Paul Bradley.

He followed with a breakout role in the 1995 action thriller Hackers. Playing Dade Murphy (or Crash Override/Zero Cool), Miller got the opportunity to work with Jesse Bradford and Matthew Lillard.

Continuing to appear in hits, Miller is next noted for taking part in Danny Boyle’s independent masterpiece Trainspotting with Ewan McGregor, Ewan Bremner, Robert Carlyle, and Kelly Macdonald.

He and Carlyle teamed up not long after along with Liv Tyler and Alan Cumming for Plunkett & Macleane.

In 1999, he returned to the Jane Austen work Mansfield Park. In this adaptation, he portrayed Edmund Bertram beside fellow actors Hannah Taylor Gordon and James Purefoy.

He continued to find steady and varied work, and it was 2003 that finally brought him a truly starring role. Portraying Lord Byron in the self-titled work Byron, Miller’s work in the film is not his best-known, but he did receive considerable praise.

More recently, he appeared with Charlize Theron and Marton Csokas in Aeon Flux.

On the television front, he also portrayed Tom from 2006 to 2007 in the crime drama Smith. Leads were filled by Ray Liotta, Virginia Madsen, Amy Smart, and Simon Baker.

Moving on in 2008, Miller landed the lead in Eli Stone, a new drama about a lawyer suffering from visions that cause others to believe he is a prophet. Natasha Henstridge and Loretta Devine costar.

In his personal life, Miller married Hackers costar Angelina Jolie on March 28, 1996. They were divorced, however, by February 3, 1999.

He has also been romantically linked to Lisa Faulkner and Natalie Appleton. Since 2006, he has been with model and actress Michele Hicks.

Outside of acting, Miller is also an avid marathon runner, which is indicated by his tattoos reading “stamina,” “endurance,” and “discipline.” He is also an accomplished saxophone player.
