Favreau’s early work as a struggling actor included supporting roles in films such as Rudy in 1993, alongside Sean Austin; and PCU in 1994, with Jeremy Piven. At this time, Favreau began to use his experiences as an in-and-out of work actor for material; crafting a script titled Swingers. After being convinced that he could make the film for under $250,000 Favreau began shooting the low-budget film, cutting costs by foregoing filming permits and shooting in inexpensive locations such as his apartment. Swingers was released in 1996 to critical acclaim, and also starred Vince Vaughn, whom Favreau had met while filming Rudy.
In 1998, Favreau starred in black comedy Very Bad Things, playing a soon-to-be married man whose Las Vegas bachelor party gets out of control. In 2000 he appeared in Love & Sex, co-starring Famke Janssen; and Daredevil in 2003, with Ben Affleck.
On November 24, 2000, Favreau married current wife, Joya Tillem. The pair have three children together: son Max, born July 25, 2001; daughter Madelaine, born April 2003; and daughter Brighton Rose, born August 2006.
In 2001, Favreau made his film directorial debut in Made, starring Vince Vaughan. Also that year, Favreau produced and hosted the Independent Film Channel’s Dinner for Five, although it was not his first time gracing the small-screen. In the 1990s, Favreau frequently guest starred on sitcoms such as Friends, playing the boyfriend of Courteney Cox’s character, Monica; as well as on Jerry Seinfeld’s Seinfeld, starring as Eric the Clown. In recent years, Favreau has made cameos on such shows as My Name Is Earl and Monk.
In the fall of 2003, Favreau scored his first financial box-office success when he directed the hit comedy Elf, starring funny man Will Ferrell. More recently in 2005, he directed the film adaptation of Zathura.
In 2006, Favreau teamed up once again with buddy Vince Vaughn and former Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston, to play a supporting role in the comedy The Break-Up. Also in 2006, Favreau announced that he had been signed to direct the long awaited big screen adaptation of the comic book Iron Man.
