Jon Heder Bio

Jon Heder

Jonathan Joseph Heder, best known for his role in Napoleon Dynamite in 2004, was born in Fort Collins, Colorado on October 26, 1977. His parents had a total of six children, including Jon’s twin brother Daniel. Heder is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and he spent over two years in Japan on mission trips with his church; as a result, he speaks fluent Japanese.

Heder graduated from South Salem High School in Salem, Oregon, in 1996, where his father runs a medical practice. He then attended Brigham Young University in Utah. While at college, Heder met Jared Hess, an aspiring director. Jared asked Heder to star in his first film, Peluca in 2003, which was produced for a school assignment. The short film was shot in two days for less than $500.

After the success of Peluca, Hess expanded on the film by creating Napoleon Dynamite. Jon was paid $1,000 for his role in the film, which had a total budget of $400,000. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004, and after garnering success at the festival, was released to the public. To date, the film has earned roughly $45 million and won three MTV movie awards. Heder personally received two of the awards for Breakthrough Male Performance and Best Musical Performance. The film co-stars Efren Ramirez as Pablo.

After Napoleon Dynamite was released, Heder has been asked to continue a similar goofy disposition in roles of other films. He also starred in a series of commercials, alongside co-star Efren Ramirez, as the character Napoleon for the Utah State Fair in 2005.

In 2002, Jon married Kirsten Heder and the couple moved to Los Angeles, California, so Jon could continue to pursue his acting career. He has said that in some ways he has become an ambassador for Mormonism. Heder has said that he will never do a sex scene for a movie because it conflicts with his religious beliefs. He constantly has to make decisions on scripts regarding their content and if it would be something he would be able to do without compromising his moral beliefs.

Following Napoleon Dynamite, Heder starred in Just Like Heaven in 2005, alongside Reese Witherspoon and Mark Ruffalo. He then starred in the Adam Sandler production, The Benchwarmers in 2006, with David Spade and Rob Schneider.

In 2003, Heder was on the show Punk’d, which is hosted by Ashton Kutcher. His twin brother, Daniel, and a friend named Darren E. were the accomplices in pulling off the prank against Jon.

Currently, Heder is the voice of the character Skull in the animated film Monster House (2006) and is coming out with his next film, Moving McAllister in 2007. The film was shot in Utah and Florida, and will co-star Mila Kunis and Rutger Hauer. Heder also recently starred in the male figure skating comedy Blades of Glory, with Will Ferrell, Will Arnett, Amy Poehler, Jenna Fischer, and Craig T Nelson.
