Jon Stewart Jonathan Stuart Leibowitz, better known as Jon Stewart, was born on November 28, 1962, in Lawrence Township, New Jersey. His mother, Marian Leibowitz, is a physicist, and his father, Donald, is an educational consultant. His father abandoned the family in 1971, which prompted Jon to unofficially drop his last name and go by Stewart instead.
Jon played the French horn in the Lawrence High School band, and has said that he felt like an outsider throughout high school. After graduation, Stewart attended the College of William and Mary located in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he majored in psychology. In college, Jon also played on the soccer team and even had an award named after him called the "Leibo" award. While in college he also coached a high school soccer team at Gloucester High School. He was briefly a fraternity member of Pi Kappa Alpha, but left after only six months. He obtained his degree in 1984.
Following graduation from William and Mary, Stewart worked a variety of jobs including being a puppeteer for children with disabilities. He also held the position of contract administrator for City University of New York and bartended at the Franklin Tavern.
By 1986 Stewart decided to try his hand at comedy and moved to New York City. There he began working the comedy club circuit and by 1989 he began hosting Short Attention Span Theater which aired on Comedy Central. With the help of his good friend David Letterman, Stewart began hosting The Jon Stewart Show in 1993. The show was cancelled in 1995 due to low ratings, but this did not seem to slow Jon down. He began appearing as a guest host for The Late Late Show filling in for Tom Snyder. He also had small parts in several films, including Big Daddy in 1999, starring Adam Sandler; and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back in 2001. He has also guest starred on several television shows, including The Nanny, starring Fran Drescher; and Spin City, with Michael J Fox.
By 1999, Stewart replaced Craig Kilborn on The Daily Show, which still airs on Comedy Central. The show has become what Jon is best known for, particularly after the show won two Emmy Awards. He was also named "Entertainer of the Year" in 2004 by Entertainment Weekly.
Since that time, he has also come out with a book called America (The Book), which was released in 2004. There have also been rumors over the past few years that when David Letterman decides to step down from hosting The Late Show, Stewart will take over in his absence.
In 1999, Jon proposed to and proceeded to marry his girlfriend Tracy McShane, who at the time worked as a veterinary technician. Stewart devised a creative way to pop the question: he enlisted the help of Will Shortz, who is the crossword editor for The New York Times. Together they created a puzzle that popped the question to McShane once completed. When they were married in November of 1999 both of them legally changed their last names to Stewart.
Their first child, Nathan Thomas Stewart, was named after his great grandfather and was born on July 3, 2004. Their second child, Maggie Rose, was born on February 3, 2006. Other members of their family include a cat named Stand and two pit bulls named Shamsky and Monkey. YUDDY |
