Jon Voight

He's partly responsible for the epitome of genetic perfection: Angelina Jolie. Best known to some as Jolie’s father, and the former father-in-law of Billy Bob Thornton, Jonathan Vincent Voight is actually entertainment perfection in his own right.

Jon Voight was born in Yonkers, New York, on December 29, 1938. His father was Czech and his mother, English. Jon attended Washington's Catholic University of America where he majored in art.

Voight turned to New York and found success as a Broadway actor. He opened in the 1961 production The Sound of the Music, as well as inThat Summer, That Fall in 1967. He also worked with Robert Duvall in an Off-Broadway production of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge.

He earned his first Academy Award when he was nominated for his role in The Midnight Cowboy. Voight played a naive Texan with stars in his eyes who masqueraded as a male prostitute. The Graduate's Dustin Hoffman played his sickly sidekick, and also earning an Oscar nod for the movie. The Midnight Cowboy also won Oscars in the categories of Best Film and Best Director, becoming the only X-rated film to win any type of Oscar. Today, adult films have their own AVN Awards.

It was almost ten years before Voight actually won an Oscar for the 1978 film, Coming Home. It was the story of a Vietnam veteran’s re-entry to American society.

In addition to Angelina, Jon has a son with James Haven Voight, also with his former French-Canadian wife, Marcheline Bertrand. Marcheline and Jon split in the late 70s and his absence took a toll in his relationship with his children. Jon and daughter Angelina tried reconciling, but Angelina believes it is no longer healthy for her to have a relationship with her father. In recent months, Jon has made public attempts to patch things up for the sake of the three grandchildren he's never met, but all to no avail.

Jon has been linked romantically to supreme vocalist Diana Ross. He earned an Emmy nomination in 2006 for his portrayal of Pope John Paul II in the CBS miniseries of the same name.
