Lucas was born on a Native reservation in Little Rock, Arkansas on June 20, 1971. Lucas moved around a lot as youngster; by the time he was just thirteen, he had already lived in thirty places, although the Lucas family eventually settled in Gig Harbor, Washington.
Lucas decided to pursue acting as a career rather than go to college immediately after his high school graduation in 1989 from Gig Harbor High School.
He first picked up guest-starring roles in a number of TV series throughout the 1990s, such as True Colors, Life Goes On, Parker Lewis Can’t Lose, Jake and the Fatman, and Cracker, in which he played the recurring role of Lt. Macy in 1999. He also appeared in the 1993 based-on-a-true-story epic Alive, starring Ethan Hawke, as well as in a few other films during that decade, such as Fatherhood in 1993, starring Patrick Swayze and Halle Berry; True Blue in 1996; Harvest in 1998, starring James Van Der Beek of Dawson’s Creek; and Restless, also in 1998.
However, it wasn’t until the 2000s that Lucas really garnered attention, exposure, and recognition for his acting work, first with his roles in American Psycho in 2000 as Craig McDermott, co-starring Christian Bale and Justin Theroux; A Beautiful Mind in 2001 as Hansen, with Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, and Paul Bettany; and Sweet Home Alabama in 2002 as Jake Perry, opposite Reese Witherspoon and Patrick Dempsey (from Grey’s Anatomy).
He later went on to snag roles in 2003's Hulk, alongside Eric Bana, Connelly again, and Sam Elliot; Secondhand Lions, also in 2003, with Michael Caine, Robert Duvall, Haley Joel Osment, and Kyra Sedgwick; and Around the Bend in 2004, opposite Caine and Christopher Walken. He also starred in Stealth with Jessica Biel and Jamie Foxx in 2005, which ended up as a huge box-office disappointment, as did his most recent work in Poseidon, co-starring Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss. Lucas was actually involved in several dangerous shoots in Poseidon, at one point making him feel like he was going to drown, and an accidental fall causing him to snap the muscles in his left thumb.
However, Lucas fared better in the recent Glory Road, taking the role of renowned basketball coach Don Haskins.
Although he’s single, Lucas has been romantically linked to several notable names like Salma Hayek—who’s currently engaged to French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, and pregnant—as well as Danish actress Connie Nielsen. Incidentally, Lucas seems to prefer older women, as both Hayek and Nielsen are several years older than him.
