Kate Winslet Biography Kate Winslet was born in 1975 in Berkshire, England. Her parents, Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges, were both actors. She has two sisters, Beth and Anna, both of whom have become actresses as well. Her uncle, Robert Bridges, was also a stage actor who starred in the original West End production of Oliver! Kate came from a respectable family; her maternal grandparents both founded and operate the Reading Repertory. Winslet began her career as an actress when she was a child. At the age of eleven she became the spokesperson in various cereal commercials. Her first few starring television roles were on BBC. The first was Dark Season in 1991, which was a children’s science-fiction series. This was followed in 1992 by the made-for-TV movie, Anglo-Saxon Attitudes and an episode in the medical drama, Casualty in 1993. Kate’s first big role was in 1994 in the film Heavenly Creatures, co-starring Melanie Lynskey. This was followed up by her role in Sense and Sensibility in 1995, co-starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant, and Alan Rickman. The part earned Kate and Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
Two years later, Kate reached the status of super-star for her role as Rose in the box office smash, Titanic. The film starred a string of well-known actors including Leonardo DiCaprio, Kathy Bates, Gloria Stuart, and Billy Zane. The movie had startling success, being the first film to ever earn more than $1 billion worldwide. It also earned Winslet a second Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role, which made her the youngest actor ever to earn two nominations. In 1998 Kate married Jim Threapleton, a well-known director. The couple had a daughter, Mia Honey, who was born in 2000. They divorced in 2001 and Kate quickly started a relationship with theater director Sam Mendes. The couple married in 2003 on an island in the Caribbean. Their first son, Joe Alfie, was born later that year. Since her blockbuster role in Titanic, critics have loved Kate. Although she has been offered several roles in other blockbuster films, Kate has turned them down, preferring low-budget pictures including Hideous Kinky in 1998 and Holy Smoke in 1999. Kate has also selected to do a few well-received American films including, The Life of David Gale in 2003, co-starring Kevin Spacey and Laura Linney. This was followed by Eternal sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004, co-starring Jim Carrey. The film also earned her yet another Oscar nomination.
Kate has been particularly adamant about the fact that she does not diet and does not feel the need to lose weight simply to conform to Hollywood standards. When the magazine GQ airbrushed her image to make her appear slimmer, she issued a statement saying that she never authorized the alterations of her image. Winslet collaborated with her husband, Sam, in 2006 for the film version of the novel Revolutionary Road, originally written by Richard Yates and appeared yet again with her Titanic screen mate, DiCaprio. In the same year Kate teamed up with Ralph Fiennes in the Holocoust movie, The Reader. Both movies earned Kate Golden Globes in January 2008. But it was February that year that really had Kate gushing at the high light of the awards year, the Oscars in LA. It was there that Kate won her first golden statue and albut burst with the excitement of the moment as she asked her father to whistle from the audience so that she could pinpoint exactly where he was and share that special moment with her parents.
