Kathleen TurnerActress Kathleen Turner was born Mary Kathleen Turner on June 19, 1954, in Springfield, Missouri. Growing up as the daughter of a U.S. ambassador, Kathleen lived in Canada, Cuba, Washington D.C., Venezuela, and England. Kathleen has credited the constant need to adjust to new situations and places during her formative years as early training for becoming an actress. While living in England, Kathleen visited the theater regularly, studying the performances of such actors as Christopher Plummer and Angela Lansbury. In high school, Kathleen took classes at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, where she studied until her father’s death in 1973, when the family moved back to Springfield, Missouri. Back in the United States, Kathleen enrolled at the University of Maryland, where she graduated in 1977 with a degree in theater.
After graduation, Kathleen moved to New York to pursue a career in show business. She divided her time between waiting tables and appearing in various television commercials and plays, but soon decided to make the move to the opposite coast and try her hand in Hollywood.
In 1981, Kathleen landed a role in Body Heat. Next, in 1983, she starred in the comedy The Man with Two Brains, alongside Steve Martin. The 1984 film Crimes of Passion marked Kathleen’s third consecutive film in which she was cast as a woman who uses sexual manipulation to get what she wanted. To avoid getting typecast, she next starred as a no-nonsense author reluctantly caught up in exotic adventures with Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone in 1984. The following year, she starred in the film’s sequel, The Jewel of the Nile. During the mid-80s, she also starred in Prizzi's Honor in 1985, and Francis Ford Coppola's Peggy Sue Got Married in 1986, for which she received an Oscar nomination.
In 1988, Kathleen lent her sultry voice to the character of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? The following year, she re-teamed with her Romancing the Stone co-stars Michael Douglas and Danny DeVito for War of the Roses. Throughout the rest of the 90s, Kathleen appeared in John Waters' Serial Mom in 1994, Moonlight and Valentino in 1995, and The Real Blonde in 1997. The year 1999 was busy for Kathleen; she starred in the children's comedy Baby Geniuses, The Prince of Central Park, and Sofia Coppola's adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides' book The Virgin Suicides.
On the small screen, Kathleen has guest-starred on Friends as Chandler Bing’s transvestite lounge singing father; as well as The Simpsons, playing the voice of the reclusive Malibu Stacy doll creator. She has also starred as a defense attorney on Law & Order.
Because of her deep husky voice, Kathleen was often been compared to a young version of Lauren Bacall at the beginning of her career. When Kathleen eventually met Lauren Bacall, she reportedly introduced herself by saying "Hi, I'm the young you."
From 1977 to 1982, Kathleen lived with boyfriend David Guc. In 1984, she married New York real-estate mogul, Jay Weiss, whose brother Stephen is married to fashion designer Donna Karen. Kathleen and Jay had one daughter together, Rachel Ann Weiss, born on October 14, 1987.
Kathleen has struggled with health problems including arthritis, which she was diagnosed with in 1992, as well as alcoholism, which she sought help for in 1999 when she checked herself into the Marworth treatment center in Waverly, Pennsylvania.
In 2000, Kathleen starred as the seductive Mrs. Robinson in the London stage revival of The Graduate. At the 2004 Savannah Film Festival, Kathleen was recognized with a lifetime achievement award from the Savannah College of Art and Design. YUDDY |
