Katie CouricTV anchor Katie Couric was born Katherine Anne Couric on January 7, 1957, in Arlington, Virginia. Katie was familiar with the media from a young age. Her father, John Martin Couric Jr., worked as a journalist for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the United Press in Washington. After graduating from Yorktown High School in Arlington, Katie enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1975, graduating in 1979 with a degree in American studies. Katie was active in student life, working at the school's award-winning newspaper, The Cavalier Daily, and becoming a sorority sister.
Katie began her career in reporting as a desk assistant for the ABC News bureau in Washington, D.C., later landing a job at CNN as an assignment editor. In 1984, Katie was hired on as a general-assignment reporter with WTVJ in Miami, Florida. During the mid-80s, she also reported for WRC-TV, an NBC affiliate station in Washington, D.C., where her hard work earned her an Associated Press award as well as any Emmy.
In 1989, Katie worked as a reporter for NBC News. From 1989 to 1991, she filled in for such anchors as Bryant Gumbel, Jane Pauley, Deborah Norville, and Maria Shriver on the Today Show and the Sunday Today Show. In 1991, Katie became a regular yet temporary Today Show co-host, filling a maternity leave for Deborah Norville. In 1992, Katie began working as a collaborator at Dateline NBC, which regularly featured her reports and named her as a contributing anchor. Katie’s spot on Today turned permanent when Deborah Norville left the show to take care of her newborn.
Throughout the 90s, Couric worked on and hosted various news specials, including Everybody's Business: America's Children in 1995, Legend to Legend Night: A Celebrity Cavalcade in 1993, and Harry Potter: Behind the Magic in 1999. In 1998, Katie’s husband Jay died of colon cancer at the age of forty-two. Since then, Katie has been active in raising public awareness of colon cancer, undergoing a colonoscopy on-air in 2000. A 2003 study published by Archives of Internal Medicine indicated that Katie’s awareness efforts were effective in increasing colonoscopy use. In 2005, Katie had a mammogram on the Today Show to raise awareness of breast cancer during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
On April 5, 2006, Katie’s fifteenth anniversary as co-host of Today, she announced her departure from the show.
