Keith RichardsAn integral member of one of the most enduring bands of all time, this sixty-something guitarist and vocalist doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. A true rock star, Richards has admittedly used drugs, is a compulsive smoker, and has been involved with several run-ins with the law. After nearly four decades, Keith and the boys continue to perform in front of sell-out crowds of screaming fans across the globe.
Keith Richards was born on December 18, 1943, in Kent, England. A shy child growing up, Richards was raised by his mother after his parents' divorce, and she exposed him to jazz greats like Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong. In 1962, the legacy of the Rolling Stones began when vocalist Mick Jagger, lead guitarist Brian Jones, vocalist and guitarist Keith Richards, and several other musicians joined forces to create their signature rhythm and blues sound, one which would evolve into a more rock-oriented one over the years. The antithesis of the clean-cut Beatles, the Stones quickly gained a slew of teen fans for their unkempt appearance and bad boy image. It would be the start of a forty-year career that continues to this day. Richards’s genius guitar playing, vocal work featured on every album, and writing collaborations with front man Mick Jagger were a major force behind such timeless classics as "I Can’t Get No Satisfaction," the tune that reached #1 around the globe and rocketed the group to superstardom. Other well-known classics from Richards and the gang include "Sympathy for the Devil," "Start Me Up," and "Brown Sugar." The band continues to tour to this day, and held their Bigger Bang tour throughout 2005 and 2006. Keith Richards and fellow band members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
Aside from his work with one of the best-known bands in the world, Keith has also enjoyed a successful solo career. In 1988, he formed Keith Richards and the X-pensive Winos, which featured guitarist Steve Jordon as well as Sarah Dash and Ivan Neville. Talk is Cheap, the group’s first album, went gold despite the fact that it produced no top 40 hits. The group also released Main Offender and toured to promote both efforts. In 1989, however, any rifts between Mick and Keith were resolved, and Richards devoted his efforts to ensuring the lasting success of his original group. Throughout his career, Richards has collaborated with other artists like George Jones, Tom Waits, and Hubert Sumlin.
In his personal life, Richards has faced his share of demons, including a heroin addition. He freely admitted his excessive use of booze and drugs during the psychedelic 60s and 70s. Arrested several times during these turbulent decades, the most serious was a 1977 Toronto arrest for cocaine and heroin possession, which resulted in a charge of importing narcotics. Facing up to seven years in prison, his sentence was considerably lessened when he was ordered to play a benefit concert. Things could have been a lot worse for Keith, however, and he has understandably stated he never wants to be arrested again. Although his drug use may have eased over the years, he is still a compulsive smoker, often partaking in the habit during the group’s live shows.
Keith had three children, two sons and a daughter, with his former partner Anita Pallenberg. After the pair separated, Richards met fashion model Patti Hansen at the infamous club Studio 54. The couple was wed on Keith’s fortieth birthday in 1983 and have been together ever since. Theodora and Alexandra, Keith’s two daughters, are both fashion models. In May 2007 Keith made his new millennium debut in the well received move, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which also starred Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, Keira Knightley as Elizabeth, Orlando Bloom as Elizabeth's love interest, and Bill Nighy as Davey Jones. With his naturally rugged looks he was the ideal father to Johnny’s Jack. YUDDY |
