Kelly Clarkson

With original aspirations to become a marine biologist, she went on to win the hearts of a nation. Kelly holds the dubious distinction of being the first winner of the ever-popular singing competition American Idol, and is the only winner to achieve lasting and significant popularity.

Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born on April 24, 1982, in Fort Worth, Texas. In seventh grade, after a teacher overheard the future Grammy winner singing in the hallway, she urged Kelly to audition for the school choir. Although she had never received vocal lessons, she sang in the middle school ensemble and performed in her high school’s musicals, effectively changing her career path. After graduation, however, Kelly’s dreams proved harder to achieve than she would have imagined. She sent out a demo CD that received little response, and then moved to what she hoped would be an opportunity-rich Hollywood. The move proved to be a dead-end as well, and Kelly appeared as an extra on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, and took on a bit role in Issues 101, a 2002 film, just to pay her bills. After four months, a frustrated Kelly moved back to Texas, where she held menial jobs like cocktail waitress, telemarketer, and Red Bull promoter.

When a brand-new reality show called American Idol held auditions, Clarkson auditioned. Paula Abdul, Randy Jackson, and the ever honest and often insulting Simon Cowell were impressed. She earned a top thirty spot, and was soon performing in front of millions of loyal viewers every week. The at-home audience loved her renditions of such classics as "Respect," "Without You," and "I Surrender" enough to make her the first ever winner of the show. Kelly beat fellow finalist Justin Guarini with 58% of the vote on September 4, 2002, and her rise to super-stardom was already well underway.

Her first single, "A Moment Like This," was released in October and shot from #52 to #1, setting a record yet to be broken. When her debut album Thankful was released the following year, critics and fans were impressed. Eventually certified double platinum and garnering a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, it was clear that Kelly’s dreams were finally coming true.

Breakaway, Clarkson’s follow-up album, saw the singer developing a more rock-oriented image and sound. The albums awards and sales made it clear that taking more creative control was a wise decision for the singer. Released by RCA records in 2004 and promoted on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Saturday Night Live, Breakaway contained four top ten singles, including "Breakaway" and "Since U Been Gone," won two Grammy Awards, and was certified five times platinum. With a 2006 tour throughout Europe and writing and composing already started on Kelly’s third, more soulful album, fans just can’t get enough of the small town Texas girl who truly made it big.

With her hectic schedule, it doesn’t appear that Kelly has time for much in the romance department. In an interview, she stated she is still getting to know herself, something she feels is necessary before she can have a significant other in her life.
