Kelly Rowland’s mother worked hard and it was difficult to give the young girl the attention she needed. When Rowland was eleven, it was decided that she would move in with the family of her close friend Beyonce Knowles. Beyonce’s father, Matthew Knowles, become Rowland’s legal guardian. It was in this atmosphere that a young group of girls formed a singing group, first known as Girls Tyme. Kelly Rowland and Beyonce were joined by their friends LaTavia Roberson and Letoya Luckett, and the quartet went on Star Search, but lost the competition.
Eventually, the group, whose name would be changed to Destiny’s Child, would lose Roberson and Luckett, Kelly Rowland and Beyonce would add Michelle Williams. In 1998 the group had their first top 10 hit, and the hits just kept on coming. In November of 2004 the group released their last album as a trio and amicably split to pursue solo projects.
Rowland produced her first solo album, Simply Deep, in 2002, which eventually went gold and produced the Grammy winning song "Dilemma," a hip hop duet with rapper Nelly. For a time she was romantically linked to Nelly. A second solo album is set to be released in 2007. In the meantime she has recorded with Earth, Wind, and Fire, and will be featured on a duet with the legendary Dionne Warrick on Warrick’s upcoming album. It seems the legendary artists know a new talent when they hear one.
In addition to her singing career, Kelly Rowland has added acting to her resume. She has starred on several episodes of the television shows The Hughley’s, American Dreams, and Girlfriends. She also had a role in the 2003 film Freddie vs. Jason.
Rowland’s personal life outside of the group Destiny’s Child has managed to mainly stay out of the public spotlight. Although there may have been drama within the group from time to time, there does not seem to be much drama in her dating life. In May of 2004 Kelly Rowland became engaged to Roy Williams, a Dallas Cowboys football player, but the engagement was broken the following year.
In July of 2006, Kelly Rowland announced that she was two months pregnant. The name of the father has not been announced.
