Kevin Norwood Bacon was born on July 8, 1959, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The actor is proud of his Philly roots, frequently doing public service announcements for the city. His father, Edmund Bacon, was a Philadelphia city planner and his mother, Ruth Bacon, was a teacher and political activist. He has one brother, Michael Bacon, who he formed a band with in 1995. The Bacon Brothers still tour together.
In 1998 Kevin Bacon married the beautiful Kyra Sedgwick, a movie star in her own rights and the current star of the hit television show The Closer. The couple met while they were filming the television drama Lemon Sky. They were married a few months later and they have two children, Travis and Sosie. Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have worked together in other projects such as Murder in the First in 1995 and Loverboy in 2005, which Bacon also directed. The movie was also the film debut of his daughter Sosie.
Before meeting Kyra Sedgwick, Bacon was the boyfriend of actress Tracy Polland. Polland broke up with Kevin Bacon to date her Family Ties co-star Michael J Fox. Polland and Fox eventually married and are still together.
Before being noticed by millions of teenage girls as the rebellious Ren in Footloose, Bacon had roles in other films such as Animal House in 1978, Friday the 13th in 1980, and Diner in 1982. After his success with Footloose, the actor chose not to capitalize on his teen idol status and waited for more serious roles to come along.
Adult roles followed in films such as She’s Having a Baby in 1988; the sci-fi hit Tremors in 1990; Flatliners in 1990, with Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland; A Few Good Men in 1992, with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson; and Apollo 13 in 1995, with Tom Hanks.
By the mid-90s Bacon was a very bankable actor known for taking both risky roles in independent films such as Stir of Echoes in 1999 and mainstream films such as Picture Perfect in 1997, with Jennifer Aniston.
Kevin Bacon continues to act, direct, and sing while being a dedicated family man. His popularity is apparent in the number of films he has made and in the pop culture game he inspired.
