When Kiefer was a young boy his family moved to Los Angeles while both of his parents worked in film. His parents split in 1970 and Kiefer moved to Toronto with his mother in 1975, where he completed high school at St. Andrew’s College in Ontario. He later attended college at both the Martingrove Collegiate Institute and Malvern Collegiate Institute. Kiefer wasn't aware that his father was an actor until he turned eighteen.
Sutherland’s first major role was in the Canadian film The Bay Boy in 1984. The film was such a success that it prompted Sutherland to move to Los Angeles and begin to seriously pursue acting. Throughout the 1980s Sutherland appeared in various television shows. In 1992, Kiefer got his big break when he starred in A Few Good Men, co-starring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise.
Kiefer has had a lively personal life, much to the media’s delight. He is known among paparazzi for being a hard drinker. His first marriage was to Camelia Kath in 1987 and the couple had one child together named Sarah Jude. The child was named after actress Sarah Jessica Parker and singer/songwriter Jude Cole. Camelia and Kiefer divorced in 1990. His friendship with The Lost Boys cast-mate, Jason Patric, and other members of the Brat Pack reportedly caused the break up of his first marriage.
In 1991, Kiefer became engaged to actress Julia Roberts, but the wedding was called off five days before the planned ceremony. That same year, Gary Oldman was pulled over for drunk driving with Kiefer in the passenger seat of his car.
In 1996, Kiefer remarried to Kelly Winn. The couple is currently going through a divorce.
In 2001 Kiefer landed the starring role in the television series 24 that airs on Fox. His role as Jack Bauer earned him a Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. For the past five years Kiefer has worked on the show fifteen hours a day, six days a week, for ten months out of the year. After a successful season five on the show, Kiefer signed on for three more seasons for a reported $40 million. This has made him the highest paying actor in a television drama.
One of Kiefer’s hobbies was riding in rodeos in the late 1990s. After becoming interested in the sport, Kiefer went out and bought several horses, bulls, tractors, and a 900-acre ranch in Montana. In his first rodeo he broke three fingers. Sutherland competed in rodeos throughout Arizona and New Mexico and went on to win first place in the U.S. Team Roping Championships. After he was through with his hobby, he simply sold all of the assets he had acquired.
Kiefer also owns a recording studio in Los Angeles with his best friend Jude Cole. The studio is called Ironworks.
