Porter started out in the entertainment business as part of an ensemble of singers, including the group Three Brown Girls, which she founded with Eboni Elektra and Nicole Johnson; as well as another girl group known as Girl 6.
During the early 90s, Porter was introduced to an A&R executive at Uptown Records, Sean Combs. Soon after, Porter was hired by Uptown as a receptionist. Although Combs was impressed with Porter’s cool and calm reserve, the pair did not begin dating until 1994, and from then on were inseparable.
Puff Daddy, as he was known as in the entertainment business, had met his match with Porter – the Southern belle who could also throw a football. In 1997, Porter gave birth to the couple’s first child, Christian Casey Combs. Soon after, Porter learned through the press that Combs had hooked up with triple-threat entertainer, Jennifer Lopez, and before long the dynamic duo were in a highly publicized relationship. Porter promptly kicked Combs to the curb, and continued to live in their home along with their children, with Combs visiting regularly.
During a December 2006 interview with Essence magazine, Porter reflected on her separation with Combs during his two-year relationship with Lopez. When asked if Combs brought their son, Christian, around Lopez, Porter replied, "Hell no! No. No. No. Do you see me? I’m a full Black woman. We don’t mix and mingle like that. I’d kill him dead. So he knew better. And besides, does she look like the type that would want to play house and family with two little Black kids? No. I don’t think it was that type of situation."
In September 2001, Porter left New York and moved back to Georgia with her two sons to be near her family. By this time, Combs, who had split with Lopez, campaigned hard to win back Porter, even appealing to herfather. The couple reconciled, and in the summer of 2006, Porter broke the news to Combs (now known as Diddy") that she was pregnant with twin girls.
On December 21, 2006, Porter gave birth to D'Lila Star and Jessie James Combs. The proud parents have no plans to marry, and Porter has been juggling an acting career along with motherhood. In 2006, Porter starred in made-for-TV movie Wicked Wicked Games, alongside Tatum ONeal. In 2001, Porter also had a role in The Brothers, alongside DL Hughley, Gabrielle Union, and Tatyana Ali.
Kim welcomed 2008 with the announcement to Combs that their relationship had finally run its course and that she intended to live her life without him.
