Born on August 19, 1965, in New York City, Kyra was the daughter of wealthy parents and grew up attending private schools. She appeared on the long-running television drama Another World while still in high school. After graduating from the University of Southern California, she was a guest star on the Spielberg directed Amazing Stories. It was her role as Donna in the 1989 Born on the Fourth of July, however, that finally got her noticed. Directed by Oliver Stone and starring Tom Cruise, the appearance effectively began her enduring career as a Hollywood actress.

Throughout the 90s, Kyra appeared in several films including Singles, which featured among its cast, Bridget Fonda and Matt Dillon; Murder in the First, which starred Christian Slater; and Phenomenon, where she played the love interest of John Travolta.

Most notable among her appearances in the 90s were those in Miss Rose White and the 1995 Something to Talk About, starring the ever-charming Julia Roberts. Both earned her a Golden Globe nomination.

Throughout the years, the stunning Sedgwick has been a guest on the multitude of talk shows, participating in interviews and on-air conversations with Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa, Howard Stern, Craig Kilborn, Rosie ODonnell, and Jay Leno.

Currently, Kyra has a starring role on the police drama The Closer, in which she plays deputy police chief Brenda Leigh Johnson. Her work as the tough-nosed investigator has brought Sedgwick considerable recognition. She earned a Gracie Award for Outstanding Female Lead in a Drama series and a Satellite Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama. Her performances have also brought her nominations for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2006. With the popularity and critical recognition for both the series and its lead actress, it’s not surprising that The Closer has recently been renewed for a third season.

Kyra’s hubby, the critically-acclaimed Kevin Bacon, is also her frequent cast mate. The pair met on the set of Lemon Sky, and have appeared together in four other films including Loverboy and The Woodsman. The couple has been married since 1988 and resides with their children, Travis and Sosie, in Connecticut.
