Larry David Bio

Larry David

Actor, writer, and producer Larry David was born on July 2, 1947, in Brooklyn, New York. Larry had a carefree childhood growing up, which he would later attribute to a difficult transition into adulthood.
In 1970, Larry received a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Maryland, College Park. In 1971, he received a degree in business.

During the mid 70s, Larry began his career in show business as a standup comedian. During that time, he met another standup comedian, Jerry Seinfeld. In 1979, Larry landed a job as a writer and performer for the 1980-82 show Fridays, a Saturday Night Live knock-off. Soon after, he got on as a writer with the "real" Saturday Night Live, but only stayed for the 1984-1985 season. David quit his job with Saturday Night Live mid-season, and in true eccentric fashion, showed up for work a few days later as if nothing had happened.

During the late 80s, Larry landed small roles in films such as Radio Days in 1987 and New York Stories in 1989. At that time, Jerry Seinfeld was in negotiations with NBC to develop a sitcom pilot originally titled The Seinfeld Chronicles. He turned to Larry, his old friend from the stand-up circuit, for assistance.

Larry became one of the major creative forces of the show, which was later re-named Seinfeld, and enjoyed a nine-year run. Jerry Seinfeld credited Larry as being 90% of the show – Larry conceived of the concept of the show about "nothing" and inspired the character of George Constanza. In addition, the character of Jerry's neighbor, Cosmo Kramer, was based on Larry’s real-life neighbor, Kenny Kramer. Larry also appeared on the show and frequently did voice-overs.

In 1996, Larry took a break from Seinfeld to write and direct the film Sour Grapes, returning to Seinfeld in 1998 to work on its final episode. In 1999 Larry became a co-screenwriter and executive producer of the film Envy, starring Ben Stiller and Jack Black. That same year, HBO aired the mostly improvised special Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm. The special was successful and HBO offered Larry his own series. The Emmy-nominated Curb Your Enthusiasm chronicled Larry’s own day-to-day life, and in 2004, was even instrumental in clearing a Los Angeles man facing the death penalty in a murder case. The suspect pleaded innocent, stating that he was at a Los Angeles Dodgers baseball game at the time of the murder. At the game, an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm happened to be filming, and captured footage of the suspect in the stands. Upon learning of the show’s part in clearing a man of murder, Larry told a reporter "I tell people that I've now done one decent thing in my life. Albeit inadvertently".

For his work on Curb Your Enthusiasm, Larry was nominated in 2005 for a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical Or Comedy. That same year, David was named one of the top 50 greatest comedy acts of all times in The Comedian's Comedian poll of comedians and comedy insiders. In 2006, Larry was again recognized for his work on Curb Your Enthusiasm when he received an Emmy nomination for Best Actor.

Larry currently lives with his wife, Laurie, and their two children in Pacific Palisades, California. Since 2005, the couple have been contributing bloggers at The Huffington Post.
