Larry Hagman Bio

Larry Hagman

Actor and director Larry Hagman was born on September 21, 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas. After his parents divorced, Hagman moved to Los Angeles to live with his grandmother. After his grandmother's death, Larry, at the age of twelve, was sent to New York to live with his mother, Broadway actress Mary Martin. While in New York, Hagman attended Bard College in Anandale-on-the-Hudson for a year. He then enrolled in Margo Jones Theatre-in-the-Round in Dallas, and was featured soon after in a production of The Taming of the Shrew at the New York City Center.

One of Hagman’s first acting gigs was as a cast member of his mother's hit show, South Pacific. He moved to England for the series and remained there for five years. While in England, Larry joined the U.S. Air Force’s entertainment unit, producing and directing several shows for the service members. Also in England, Hagman met Swedish designer, Maj Axelsson The couple married in December of 1954.

Early on in Hagman’s acting career, success came in the form of various television guest-starring roles, including a villain on an episode of Sea Hunt, a lawyer on daytime soap opera The Edge of Night, and a Russian/ English interpreter on Fail Safe. In 1965, Hagman landed the role as Major Tony Nelson on the campy sitcom I Dream of Jeannie, for which he also directed several episodes. After leaving the series, Hagman declined to speak about it until 2001, when he wrote his tell-all biography Hello Darlin': Tall (and Absolutely True) Tales About My Life.

Hagman’s most-memorable role came in 1978, when he was cast as the conniving JR Ewing on television’s first prime time soap opera, Dallas. Larry was reluctant to accept the role at first; but was eventually encouraged by his wife Maj. He would go on to star in the series for eleven years, and the 1979-80 season cliffhanger episode, "Who Shot J.R.?" would become one of the highest-rated television shows in history, spawning many spoofs in popular culture. Larry seems to have embraced JR as the character for which he is most remembered. His official website features a picture of Larry dressed in-character as JR, with the greeting "Hello Darlin’, come on in."

Larry’s directorial credits also include the low-budget comedy/horror film Beware The Blob!, released in 1972. Some refer to the movie as "the film that J.R. shot."

After leaving Dallas, Hagman’s career slowed due to health problems, including a battle with alcoholism and liver cancer. In August of 1995, he was the recipient of a liver transplant that ultimately saved his life. One year after his operation, Hagman became the National Spokesperson for the 1996 U.S. Transplant Games sponsored by the National Kidney Foundation. He has also played a key role in generating public awareness on the importance of organ donation, and served a long-term role as the chairperson of the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout.

Larry and his wife, Maj (whom he affectionately refers to as Superchick), also currently support and promote a number of non-profits, including The Ojai Foundation, dedicated to spiritual practice; the Institute of Ecolonomics, dedicated to developing non-polluting technologies; and the Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF).

Larry currently lives with his wife on a ranch in Ojai, California, also dividing their time between a condo in Santa Monica, and a home in Santa Fe. Larry enjoys Harley Davidson motorcycles, fishing, traveling, and collecting hats and flags.
