Laura Bush Bio

Laura Bush

Without even knowing it, Laura Lane Welch attended the same school in the 1960s as her future husband George W Bush. Along with Laura and her future husband, coming up in the year behind her, was Tommy Lee Jones. In 1963, just one year before graduating from Robert E Lee High School, Laura was involved in a car accident, which she caused by running a red light, and subsequently caused the death of a school friend. However, no charges were ever filed.

Laura Bush was born in Midland, Texas, on November 4, 1946, and was the only child born to her parents, Jenna Louise and Harold Bruce Welch. After graduating, Laura became a school teacher at John F Kennedy Elementary School in Houston, Texas. In 1977, at a friend’s backyard barbecue, Laura met George W Bush and within three months of their meeting they were married on November 5, of the same year, at a Methodist church in Midland.

By 1981 Laura and George had become the proud parents of twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara. In 1995 Laura Bush became the first lady of Texas when her husband was elected as governor of Texas. She remained the first lady of Texas until 2000 when George W Bush became President; she then became the first lady of the United States. Laura Bush worked on education issues and women's health issues, and launched the first National Book Festival. Following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, she issued warnings to parents saying, "don't let your children see the pictures over and over, especially young children, but even elementary school-aged children shouldn't be watching it all the time".

She felt the warnings were necessary at this time based on how children had reacted when watching television coverage of the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. Laura Bush made history in November of 2001 when she became the first person, other than a president to deliver the weekly presidential radio address. Forbes magazine, in 2004, named Laura Bush the second most powerful woman in the United States and the fourth most powerful in the world.

While being interviewed on the Larry King Live show in May 2005 Lynne Cheney said that Mrs. Bush should run for President in 2008. Dick Cheney concurred, leading to some press musings of a match-up between Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.

In late October of 2006 Laura Bush discovered a sore that was on her right leg was not healing and had a biopsy taken. The sore was found to be a form of cancer. In November that year, around the time of the elections on November 7, she had the tumor removed and revealed the news to the press on December 19, 2006.
