Laura Dern Bio

Laura Dern

Actress Laura Dern was born on Feb 10, 1967, in Santa Monica, California. As the daughter of two successful actors, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd, Laura was initially discouraged from pursuing acting by her parents. However, she made her film debut at just six years old in White Lightning (1973). The following year, Dern landed a bit part in Martin Scorsese's film Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Before she had even reached her teens, Laura was already close to her full-grown height, which would eventually reach an impressive five feet, ten inches. As a result, she often slouched to avoid being noticed and was teased by her classmates.

In 1980, Laura got her first major role in Adrian Lyne's Foxes. By 1983, Laura had decided to formally study acting at the Lee Strasberg Institute. The next few years saw Laura landing steady roles portraying innocent characters in such films as Teachers in 1984 and Mask in 1985. In 1986, Laura broke her typecast as a wide-eyed innocent by playing a rebellious, sexually precocious teen in Smooth Talk in 1986, for which she was recognized with a New Generation Award from the Los Angeles Film Critics.

That same year, Laura starred in David Lynch's Blue Velvet. She teamed up with David Lynch again four years later when she played a young vixen on the run with her lover, played by Nicolas Cage, in Wild at Heart in 1990. During filming, Laura passed out after smoking four cigarettes at once, as directed by David Lynch. Laura’s real-life mother, Diane Ladd, also played her villainous mother in the film. Mother and daughter would wind up sharing the screen again the following year in Rambling Rose. Both received Oscar nominations for their performances.

In 1993, Laura landed a part in Steven Spielberg's summer blockbuster, Jurassic Park. In 1999, Laura starred in October Sky; and later that year, co-starred again with her mother in Billy Bob Thornton's film Daddy and Them.

The beginning of the new millennium was a busy time in Laura’s career. In 2001 alone, she returned to her Jurassic roots to star in Jurassic Park III, as well as Novocain, Focus, and I Am Sam, with Sean Penn.

Laura’s appearances on the small screen have also been met with acclaim. In 1992, she received an Emmy nomination and Golden Globe Award for her performance in the HBO docudrama Afterburn. In 1997, she received another Emmy nomination for her performance as a lesbian in the now-historic "coming out" episode of Ellen DeGeneres’ sitcom, Ellen.

On December 23, 2005, Laura married her boyfriend of five years, musician Ben Harper. The couple has two children – son, Ellery Walker, born on August 21, 2001; and daughter, Jaya, born on November 28, 2004. Ben also has two children from a previous marriage – son, Charles James, and daughter, Harris.

Prior to her relationship with Ben Harper, Laura had high-profile relationships with Kyle McLachlan, Renny Harlin, and her Jurassic Park co-star, Jeff Goldblum. She was also in a relationship with Billy Bob Thornton until seeing pictures in the media of Billy Bob romancing actress Angelina Jolie, whom he later married and is now divorced from.

Laura currently supports charitable causes such as The Children's Health Environmental Coalition, which raises awareness of toxic substances hazardous to children’s health.
