Laurence Fishburne Bio
|
|
|
Laurence FishburneIt’s difficult not to think of him as Morpheus, Neo’s mentor in the sci-fi futuristic thriller series The Matrix. Even though Laurence Fishburne is probably most well-known for that particular role, he has actually been an actor since he was twelve, playing a wide variety of roles.
Laurence Fishburne (the third), an actor who has been nominated for several Academy Awards, was on born July 30, 1961, in Augusta, Georgia, to Laurence Fishburne II and Hattie, who divorced during his childhood. His mother raised him in Brooklyn.
Laurence starting acting at age twelve when he was cast on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live in 1973, and later appeared in director Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 film Apocalypse Now, which featured Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, and Robert Duvall. Another little-known fact about Laurence Fishburne is that he played a recurring guest role on the children’s television program Pee-Wee’s Playhouse as Cowboy Curtis, alongside Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman in the 1980s.
However, it wasn’t until he played a starring role as Jason in Boyz N the Hood (also starring Cuba Gooding Jr.) in 1991 that Fishburne became internationally known as an actor with real talent. The following year Laurence garnered an Emmy Award for one episode in the TV program Tribeca, which lasted only one season. He later received an Oscar nomination for his role as Ike Turner in What’s Love Got to Do With It?—a Tina Turner biopic co-starring Angela Bassett as Tina in 1993.
The first installment of The Matrix came in 1999, with Fishburne starring alongside Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hugo Weaving. This role garnered the actor with the fame he enjoys today. Both of the sequels to The Matrix were released in 2003. Since then, he has been featured in such films as Mystic River in 2003, starring Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, and Laura Linney; Assault on Precinct 13 in 2005, co-starring Ethan Hawke; and Mission: Impossible III in 2006, with Tom Cruise and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
In addition to film acting, Laurence Fishburne is also a notable stage actor (he won a Tony Award in the early 1990s for his work in August Wilson’s play Two Trains Running) and has also served as a producer (for Hoodlum in 1997, Once in the Life in 2000, and Akeelah and the Bee in 2006), and screenwriter for Once in the Life.
Laurence Fishburne married actress Hajna O Moss in 1985 and in typical Hollywood-style, divorced her not too long after in the early 1990s. The couple has two children, Langston, born in 1987, and Montana, born in 1991. Laurence married again in 2002 to another actress, Gina Torres. They now live in New Rochelle, New York. YUDDY |
