Laurie Metcalf Bio

Laurie Metcalf

Lauren Ophelia Metcalf was born on June 16, 1955, in Carbondale, Illinois. She graduated from Ewardsville High School in Ewardsville, Illinois, and at one time was able to type at a pace of ninety words per minute. Laurie then attended Illinois State University earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in theater in 1976.

Laurie began her professional acting career in the late 1970s as one of the founding cast members of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. Her husband at the time, Jeff Perry, was one of the three founding members. Other members of the troupe included John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, and Glenne Headly.

Metcalf was asked to join the first season of Saturday Night Live in 1981. She only appeared in one episode, thanks to a writers strike that shut down the show for the rest of the season, and she was not asked back for the following season.

Throughout the 1980s Metcalf landed several films developing herself as a character actress. Some of the films she has been involved with include Desperately Seeking Susan in 1985, starring Madonna and Rosanna Arquette; Making Mr. Right in 1987, starring John Malkovich and Ann Magnuson; Miles from Home n 1988, starring Richard Gere and Helen Hunt; and Internal Affairs in 1990, starring Richard Gere, Andy Garcia, and Elijah Wood.

It was not long after establishing her career as an actress that Metcalf was approached to join the cast of Roseanne. She joined the show in 1988 along with star Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Sarah Gilbert, Michael Fishman, and Sarah Chalke. Metcalf received much acclaim for her role as the kooky sister. She won three Emmy Awards in three consecutive years as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series in 1992, 1993, and 1994. She was also nominated for the same award in 1995.

Throughout her run on Roseanne, Metcalf continued to earn supporting roles in films like Uncle Buck in 1989, starring John Candy and Macaulay Culkin; Toy Story in 1995, starring Tom Hanks and Tim Allen; and Leaving Las Vegas in 1995, starring Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue.

Metcalf has continued to appear on television, usually making guest appearances on hit shows. In 1999 she made a guest appearance on the show 3rd Rock From the Sun, starring Jon Lithgow, which earned her an Emmy award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series. She also made a guest appearance on Monk in 2006, with Tony Shalhoub, earning her another Emmy award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.

Laurie is currently married to Matt Roth. They have one son together, Will Theron, born on November 20, 1993, and a daughter, Mae, who was born in July of 2005 by a surrogate mother due to Laurie’s age; she was fifty at the time of birth. Laurie also has one daughter with her first husband, Zoe Perry, who was born in 1984.

Most recently, Metcalf will continue her rounds guest-starring on popular shows like Without a Trace, Grey’s Anatomy, Dharma & Greg, and Desperate Housewives.
