Lauryn Hill Bio

Lauryn Hill

Extraordinarily talented and beautiful Lauryn Hill has, according to many, taken over the title of "Queen of Soul" from Aretha Franklin as the frontwoman of The Fugees, with the world-renowned breakthrough release of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, and for winning eight Grammy Awards.

Lauryn Hill, a record producer, musician, and actress in addition to a singer and recording artist, was born on May 25, 1975, in New Jersey. She developed a love and obvious talent for singing and performing as a young child. Hill also dabbled in acting, including a stint in 1991 on the soap As the World Turns and in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, starring Whoopi Goldberg, which really highlighted the extent of her vocal talent.

The Fugees (The Refugee Camp) formed in 1988 when Lauryn was only thirteen years old, with Prakazrel "Pras" Michel and his cousin and fellow Haitian, immigrant Wyclef Jean. The Fugees released four albums. Their first attempt, Blunted on Reality, released in 1994, did not receive the instant hit success that was expected. Their Grammy-winning follow-up two years later, The Score, which included the mega hit single cover of Roberta Flack’s Killing Me Softly, reached six-time platinum status and worldwide sales of 18 million. The Score also included covers of Bob Marley’s and the Delfonics’ songs. Other albums of the Fugees included Refugee Camp—Bootleg Versions, also 1996, and their Greatest Hits album in 2003.

The Fugees disbanded after their huge success with The Score, and Lauryn Hill decided to go solo, and released The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998. Her album became unbelievably successful, giving Lauryn eleven Grammy nominations and five wins, including Album of the Year, beating Madonna’s Ray of Light.

Hill later released the controversial MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 in 2002, an album displaying a new and different Hill, with a more laidback and simple tone. Most of the songs consisted of only acoustic guitar and her raspy voice. The album was met with mixed reviews, yet still achieved platinum status. Around this time, Lauryn Hill decided to remove herself from the limelight, media, and public attention. She took several years out to focus on herself and expressed herself creatively through writing music, poetry, and screenplays.

Hill created some controversy with the Catholic Church when she made a shocking public speech on December 13, 2003, decrying the sexual exploitation of young boys by Catholic priests, asking the Church to repent, and then performing two songs entitled "Damnable Heresies" and "Social Drugs."

Lauryn Hill is also famous and appreciated for her extensive humanitarian work, most notably for founding the Refugee Project, and has won various awards for her work.

On September 18, 2004, the Fugees reunited and performed at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party in New York City. They also toured Europe in late 2005 and performed again for a special reunion concert in Hollywood. The Fugees are reportedly working on another album, and several singles and songs have already leaked, including "Wannabe," which is strikingly similar to Michael Jackson’s "I Wanna Be Where You Are." Lauryn Hill is also reportedly working on another solo project, in collaboration with The Wailers and John Legend, who had previously worked with her.

Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley, son of the late reggae music icon Bob Marley, have been together since 1996, although it’s unknown whether or not the couple is actually married. They have four children together, named Zion David, born in 1997; Selah Louise, born in 1998; Joshua, born in 2002; and John, born in 2003. Lauryn is also friends with actor Zach Braff.
