Lebron James Bio

LeBron James

NBA star LeBron James was born on December 30, 1984, in Akron, Ohio. As the son of a sixteen-year-old single mom, LeBron came from humble beginnings. He began playing basketball at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Ohio, and harbored NBA ambitions as early as his junior year. During his sophomore year, LeBron was named Ohio’s "Mr. Basketball," and became the first sophomore selected for the USA Today All-USA First Team. By senior year, LeBron was declared "The Chosen One" by Sports Illustrated magazine, becoming the first high school basketball player to grace the cover since Rick Mount.

LeBron tried to get drafted to the NBA early, petitioning for an adjustment to the association’s eligibility rules which required a prospective player’s high school completion. Although unsuccessful, LeBron’s attempt and the promising talent behind it garnered attention. His high school games were televised nationally on ESPN2 and regionally on pay-per-view, and celebrities like NBA star Shaquille O'Neal attended games to watch the prodigious young star. A celebrity in his own right, LeBron has appeared on the cover of XXL magazine with Jay-Z, Teairra Mari, Peedi Peedi, Freeway, Kanye West, and Foxy Brown.

In 2003, LeBron was the first overall pick of the NBA Draft. He was picked up by the Cleveland Cavaliers, becoming the second high school player taken at the number one draft position. Because of the anticipation leading up to his NBA career, LeBron secured a $95 million shoe contract with Nike before even playing a single NBA game. He went on to win Rookie of the Year honors, and joined the ranks of Oscar Robertson and Michael Jordan as one of the only three players to average at least twenty points, five rebounds, and five assists per game during a rookie season. The Cavaliers improved by eighteen wins during LeBron’s first season but failed to make the playoffs.

In 2006, the Cavaliers made their first playoff appearance since 1998. The same year, LeBron signed a contract extension worth $60 million, which secured him with the Cavaliers through the 2009-10 season. NBA restrictions state that a player with less than seven years experience can only be paid a maximum of 25% of a team's salary cap under the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. This rule may have capped LeBron’s salary significantly.

In 2004, LeBron played on the U.S. Olympic team in Athens, and in 2006, played on the U.S. team at the World Championships in Japan. Despite the high expectations that follow LeBron wherever he goes, the team finished with bronze medals both times. LeBron has been named as one of three captains for the USA Men's Basketball National Team from 2006-08, along with Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. Since the team did not win the 2006 World Championships, they are required to compete at the Tournament of Americas Olympic Qualifiers in 2007 so that they will qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

On October 6, 2004, LeBron and his high school sweetheart, Savannah Crinson, welcomed the birth of their son, Lebron James Junior.
